The Fiat 500L is up to an all-time high #2, a level the 500 has never reached.

After 44 consecutive months of year-on-year decline, the Italian car market seems to now have got its mojo back: March marks the third time in a row sales are growing year-on-year at +5% and 140,115 registrations. The year-to-date total now stands at 379,157 units, up 6% on 2013. Brand-wise, Fiat evolves like the market at +4% and 29,565 sales, above Volkswagen (stable) and Ford (-2%). Renault is up a spectacular 58% on March 2013 in 4th place, Opel up 23%, Dacia up 22%, Volvo up 27% and Skoda up 43%.
The last Fiat model other than the Panda/Punto to have reached #2 was the Seicento.
This month the Italian models ranking steps into another dimension: below traditional leader the Fiat Panda, the Fiat 500L beats the Punto for the very first time, and not by a little margin: 7,072 sales and 5% (both records) vs. 5,139 and 3.7% for the Punto – its new lowest ever market share and first time ever below 4%. After dropping to #2 for the first time ever in September 2005, this is the first time the Punto is down to #3 since its original launch in November 1993! In fact, in the last 10 years, only twice did a model other than the Fiat Panda/Punto managed to rank inside the Italian monthly Top 2: in December 2007 (Toyota Yaris) and March 2010 (Ford Fiesta). The last time another Fiat reached that level was in August 2003 (Seicento). It’s a ranking the Fiat Nuova 500 never ever reached since its July 2007 launch.

Full March 2014 analysis, Top 50 models and Top 44 All-brands Ranking Tables below.
With the Fiat 500 up one spot to #4, this month the Top 4 is 100% Fiat and the Top 5 is 100% Italian with the Lancia Ypsilon at #5. Note the Ypsilon is only 102 units below the Punto in March, and we can now truly say the Punto is living its last months atop the Italian ranking as a nameplate, as it will be replaced by a new 500 variant next year. Strong performers this month include the Nissan Qashqai up 3 spots on February to #10, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta back up 8 ranks to #13, the VW Up up 10 to #17, Opel Astra up 22 to #24 and the Citroen C4 Picasso up a further 2 spots to #32.
