Cold weather causes continued school closings
The first major snowstorm since early Januaryis blanketing New Jersey, causing state offices and many schools to closeand traffic issues during the morning commute.
Forecasters are predictingmore than a foot of snow in parts of the Garden State, bringing with it winds strong enough to snap tree limbs. Residents in South Jersey likely won"t receive as much snow as those further up north, but they can still expect strong winds and icy roads Thursday night.

1:20 p.m.:As snowstorm winds down, major cold snap looms
1 p.m.:An accident and downed pole and wires has closed and detoured all southbound lanes on Route 23 north of Wantage School Road in Wantage, according to the state Department of Transportation.
12:50 p.m.:Early snowfall totals from around N.J. range as high as 10 inches
The DOT reported the following closures:
* An accident has closed the left and center eastbound express lanes on I-78 east of Exit 48 - Route 24 west in Springfield.
* An accident with injuries has closed all westbound lanes on Route 30 at Route 130/Collingswood Circle.
* A jackknifed tractor-trailer has closed and detoured all northbound lanes on Route 287 at Exit 59 - Route 208 in Franklin Lakes, causing delays of 10 to 15 minutes.
* A disabled tractor-trailer has closed and detoured northbound lanes onRoute 208 in the area of Route 287 in Oakland.
12:30 p.m.:Flight delays: storm strands thousands of airline passengers
11:40 a.m.: Rutherford police advise motorists to avoid Route 17 south ramp to Route 3 east due to a jackknifed tractor-trailer. Traffic will be diverted onto Route 17 south.
11:35 a.m.: A disabled tractor-trailer has closed all northbound lanes on the local side of New Jersey Turnpike in the area of Exit 72 - US 9W/US 1&9/Route 46 in Leonia, according to theDOT.

11:15 a.m.: Federal courts in Newark, Camden and Trenton, and the U.S. Attorney"s Office have closed due to the weather.
11:10 a.m.:Route 287 south in Mahwah has since reopened, but now the northbound side of Route 287 near Exit 66 is closed due to multiple jackknifed tractor trailers, according to Mahwah police.
11 a.m.:The DOT reported on 511nj.organ accident on Route 73 northbound near Route 711/Norcross Road in Winslow Township has closed all lanes.
10:50 a.m.: The Palisades Interstate Parkway has reopened between Exit 2 - US 9W (Alpine) and Exit 1 - Palisade Avenue (Englewood Cliffs).
10:10 a.m.: A vehicle is off the roadway on the Palisades Interstate Parkway southbound between Exit 2 - US 9W (Alpine) and Exit 1 - Palisade Avenue (Englewood Cliffs). All lanes are closed.
10:05 a.m.: Skyline Drive in Ringwood is closed in both directions between Ringwood Avenue and Route 287 due to the weather.
A speed restriction of 25 miles per hour is in effect on the Outerbridge Crossing in Perth Amboy in both directions due to the snow.
10 a.m.: Parsippany police report Route 10 east between Powder Mill Road and Tabor Road/Route 53 has reopened.

Patricia Russomagno, spokeswoman for the Internal Revenue Service, reported in a Twitter postthat the Trenton IRS office will close at 10 a.m. Thursday.
9:45 a.m.:Here"s what the snowstorm looks like around N.J. on social media
Parsippany police reported in a Facebook postthat Route 10 east between Powder Mill Road and Tabor Road/Route 53 is currently closed due to multiple vehicle crashes.
9:25 a.m.: The DOT reported on511nj.orgthat all southbound lanes were closed on Route 287, south of Exit 66 for Route 17 in Mahwah due to icing and snow removal. According to Mahwah police, traffic is being detoured onto Route 17.
9:20 a.m.: The DOT reported on 511nj.orgthat Fort Lee Road in Leonia, a cut-through to the George Washington Bridge, is closed. The New Jersey Turnpike north Exit 70 a & b, which leads to Fort Lee Rd, is also closed.
9 a.m.:The Federal Aviation Administration is now reporting delays of 15 minutes or less for the following airports: Newark, Philadelphia, Teterboro, La Guardia and JFK.
New Jersey State Police said in a Twitter posttroopers have responded to 145 motor vehicle crashes and 148 motor vehicle aids in their patrol areas since midnight.
A jackknifed tractor-trailer has closed all eastbound lanes on Route 78east of Rattlesnake Bridge Road in Bedminster in Somerset County.
8:35 a.m.: The National Weather Service is reporting more than 10 inches of snowin Wantage, Sussex County so far. Current snowfall totals of up to six inches in Warren County, up to five inches in Morris County, up to fourinches in Hunterdon.
8:25 a.m.:The rain-snow line continues to push south through Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties. Nearly the entire state already has accumulating snow.
