Marilu Henner and Derek"s Jive - Dancing with the Stars 2016 Season 23 Week 1

Dancing With the Stars" fall 2016 season was already shaping up to be one of the most talked aboutbut after tonight"s premiere, it will be for reasons no one expected. A group of protestors who were wearing a "Anti Lochte" T-shirt stormed the stage while Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte and pro dancer Cheryl Burke were receiving feedback for their dance, just 10 minutes prior to the end of the show. Screaming ensued, security promptly ran on to the stage to gain control of the situation, and host Tom Bergeron threw to a commercial break. When the live show returned minutes later, Ryan said he was hurt by what had just transpired, and Cheryl was clearly shaken. Video of the incident was not shown to audiences on the east coast and in the central time zone, and the press sitting in the backstage area (including myself) were not allowed inside until six minutes after the show. We"ll gather more information as it becomes available and have a full report on exactly what happened later tonight.

Update: At 10:35 P.M. P.T., a BBC Worldwide Productions spokesperson said, "Two individuals stormed the dance floor tonight and were immediately subdued and escorted out of the building. The matter is now being handled by the authorities."

In the meantime, there were plenty of performances to discuss. Here"s what happened:

Marilu Henner and Derek Hough: Marilu"s reaction to finding out Derek was her partner was as epic as an Oprah surprise from her talk show days. I could watch that intro package on a loop all d**n day long. And can we talk about Marilu"s body? She"s the Marla Maples of this season, but with Derek by her side, she"ll hopefully last much longer (she also seems to have a much more energetic personality). While she"s no Jennifer Grey (Derek"s last partner over age 40 that he won the Mirrorball with), Marilu has the talent and skill to be this season"s dark horse. Score: 27/40

James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess: Ariel the Little MermaidSharna, in her glittery teal dress with red hair and mermaid waves, transformed race-car driver James into a bona fide dancer, and my new dark horse for season 23 (sorry, Mariluthings change very fast around here). High on technique and smooth on the dance floor, James might know his way around a ballroom just as well as he does around a race track. Score: 31/40

Calvin Johnson and Lindsay Arnold: All the women were hooting and hollering backstage the minute Calvin took his first spin on the dance floor. While he was certainly adorable, I"m wondering what I missed that I wasn"t cheering like my team just won the World Series. (Seriously, people were freaking out backstage.) Still, I already can"t wait to see more and am impressed with Calvin"s attitude. Score: 26/40

Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev: Whatever Maureen is drinking, give me some of that. Her appreciation for everything in life is seriously infectious; it"s just a shame that Mischa Barton couldn"t be here to see this. And her "I just met Babyface!" comment had the entire pressroom howling. As for the dancing, it needed refinement, as Len Goodman said, but no doubt Maureen will find the positive in even some pretty low scores. Score: 22/40

Babyface and Allison Holker: Wanna make a bet that Maureen McCormick was watching Babyface"s dance like a proud mom backstage, and the two are already planning a celebratory drink after the show? They"re going to end up the cutest DWTS (platonic) couple after the end of this journey. As for the dancing, Babyface was full of razzle dazzle, but the question remains whether he can channel it into something more over the next few weeks. Score: 26/40

Amber Rose and Maksim Chmerkovskiy: Amber Rose was totally fierce at the VMAs two weeks ago, but that fire was somehow missing in her DWTS debut. She"s stunning, bold, and talented, but it felt like she was holding back on the dance floor. Come on, Amber, we know you an bring it next week! Score: 24/40

Vanilla Ice and Witney Carson: In case these two don"t make it past week three (because there"s no elimination this week), they had to break out Vanilla"s bread and butter early on. That would be "Ice Ice, Baby," if you somehow blanked out the year 1991. And to be honest, the 2016 version was pretty perfect. Whether Vanilla lasts past next week or not, thank you for this gem tonight. Score: 25/40

Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko: That"s s*x appeal to the nth degree. Wow. Everyone loved itexcept for Len Goodman, who said that Jana has so much talent she and Gleb didn"t need to make the dance as sexy as it was (I"m sure many people would disagree with you, Len). Still, let"s hope Gleb can break out some creative choreography next week. Score: 27/40

Jake T. Austin and Jenna Johnson: Aww, teen love at its finest. Although Jenna and Jake are only seven months apart in age, I thought Jake was going to crumble at the sight of Jenna"s barely-there costume and whiplash-like moves. But hey, the first day of school can be overwhelming, so take this next week to hone your skills and come back with renewed optimism! Score: 22/40

Rick Perry and Emma Slater: Rick was not a front-runner in the GOP Presidential race, but he may just be the frontrunner to be the first eliminated in season 23. Score: 20/40

Terra Jole and Sasha Farber: If any of you wondered how this partnership would work, then wonder no more: Watching Terra dance with Sasha was as natural as anyone else (and better than quite a few of the evening"s other pairs). For someone who"s not an actor or athlete, Terra could give lessons on enthusiasm and star power. Score: 25/40

Ryan Lochte and Cheryl Burke: TBH, I expected not great things from the man who coined the term "Jeah," but I was pleasantly surprised. Ryan"s actually got moves! And great posture! And engaging facial expressions! Yes, he was stiff in parts, and his turns need work, but his enthusiasm and charisma...OK, wait, what just happened? Someone stormed the stage, and Cheryl, Ryan, and the entire audience were completely stunned. Score: 24/40

Laurie Hernandez and Val Chmerkovskiy: To be honest, not many backstage were watching the Olympic gymnast dance after the Lochte incident, but Laurie got one of the highest scores of the night and deservedly so. Score: 31/40
