This resource guide is intended to provide comprehensive information and resources related to health informatics. Also known as health information systems, healthcare informatics, medical informatics, nursing informatics, biomedical informatics and clinical informatics, it is a field that is growing faster than most other occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The goal of this guide is to provide those interested in the field of informatics or the study of informatics with abundant and varied information related to the subject. Informatics Associations

American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) – The American Medical Informatics Association connects informatics professionals and students through education, meetings, research programs and policy. For over 35 years AMIA has worked to transform health care through knowledge and collaboration between research, consumers and public health.

International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) – IMIA is a bridge between organizations working in health informatics and biomedical informatics. IMIA offers leadership and expert guidance to associations and policy makers as a way to improve healthcare.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) – The American Health Information Management Association is a global association of leaders in informatics, health information management and health data technology. AHIMA promotes technological advances in health information systems in an ethical and appropriate manner as well as making sure health information is accurate and trustworthy.

Association for Pathology Informatics (API) – The Association for Pathology Informatics promotes pathology informatics academically and as a clinical subspecialty. Pathology informatics involves collecting, examining and storing data from laboratories to better understand disease processes and improve patient care.

Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS) – The Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems is for physicians who are interested in or are responsible for health information technology. AMDIS members attempt to improve medical practice through advancing Applied Medical Informatics. AMDIS offers networking opportunities, presentations, programs and conference.

National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO) – The National Association of Health Data Organizations is an educational association focused on improving the collection and use of healthcare data. NAHDO membership includes both private and state government agencies that maintain healthcare databases.

American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) – Through research, education and professional activities, the American Nursing Informatics Association works to advance nursing informatics. ANIA has more than 3,000 professional members in over 30 countries.

American Society of Health Informatics Managers (ASHIM)

The American Society of Health Informatics Managers is for technical professionals specializing in health information technology. ASHIM sets and enforces requirements to obtain the Certified Health Informatics Systems Professional (CHISP®) certification. This includes education, exam, ethics and other requirements. ASHIM offers online training in computer science, medical information systems, lab simulations and the US Healthcare system.

Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS)

The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society is part of a global network of HIMSS societies with more than 52,000 members. The society is a global leader in improving health through information technology. HIMSS offers market research, events, education and leadership.

American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)

The American Nurses Credentialing Center promotes excellence in nursing through certifying and recognizing individual nurses who work in specialized areas such as informatics.
