At first glance, Health Informatics (HI) and Health Information Management (HIM) seem like two sides of the same coin; but, in reality, they both serve very different purposes in the delivery of quality healthcare. While each uses information technology to achieve their specific goal, the primary difference between the two is that HIM usually relies on the information technology processes needed to store and retrieve patient data accurately and comply with federal and state regulations. Health Informatics, conversely, depends on technology to determine appropriate information management and information technology to improve patient care.

Improvements in healthcare technology, and the ability to analyze and decipher data, has led many clinics and hospitals to move toward evidence-based patient care by integrating individual clinical outcomes with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research.

In 2012, government regulations contained in the Affordable Care Act requires healthcare providers to integrate electronic health records technology; and, according to a 2012 study by  the PricewaterhouseCoopers Health Research Institute, cited by U.S. News and World Report, this mandate, “…found that 70 percent of health insurers, 48 percent of hospitals and 39 percent of pharmaceutical and life sciences companies plan to increase hiring of technical informatics professionals over the next two years.” U.S. News and World Report went on to estimate the median salary range for clinical data analysts at $55,000 to about $95,000 for clinical informatics managers. Positions in HI and HIM include: Clinical data analysis, Compliance Officers, Application analysis, Health information management, Information technology consultant, Clinical informatics manager, Chief information officer.

Answering the need for more trained and qualified information technologists, many universities and colleges are offering online graduate programs in Health Informatics and/or Health Information Management.
