And the award goes to…..The “Rap God” himself, Eminem. The rap artist took home the award for “Artist of the Year” at the inaugural YouTube Music Awards. The first ever award show was broadcasted live online last night from New York City.
Unlike other award shows, the awards are handed out on a decision that is fully based on the amount of views and subscribers each artist gets on YouTube, as well as a total of 60 million YouTube viewers who voted prior to the award show.
With a total of six awards being handed out (see full list below), there were also several performances that took place last night as well.
The first ever YouTube Music Awards, also known as YTMA, was kicked off with a performance by rock band Arcade Fire. The band revealed their new single “Afterlife.”
Eminem performed, what has claimed to be the fastest rap track ever “Rap God,” which was filmed and broadcasted in black and white. The rapper stunned YouTube viewers by performing the track live and not missing any words.
Lady Gaga also took to the stage performing a new song titled “Dope”. The single is off of her upcoming studio album ARTPOP, which is expected to be released November 11. The pop diva gave an emotional performance, where she came to tears as she performed while playing her piano (performance below).
Taylor Swift also took home a YouTube award, with her hit “I Knew You Were Trouble” winning the YouTube phenomenon award. South Korean girl group Girls’ Generation took home an award, winning Video of the Year, for their song “I Got A Boy” beating out Lady Gaga, One Direction, Miley Cyrus and others.
The award show was hosted by actor Jason Schwartzman and Reggie Watts.
