#TheTraditionContinues

This summer we announced a new look four college brand. We are continuing the tradition started in 1876 to 2016 by introducing two new logos!

The new academic logo highlights the most recognizable architecture on the Belmont Abbey College campus–the Basilica Mary Help of Christians.

The new athletic mark is a freshly redesigned crusader with a regal – yet competitive look. It has a more engaging style than the old mark which was in profile.

Welcome to the Abbey Family

We’re so happy to have Billy, Makiem , Amanda, and Tommy now part of the Belmont Abbey College family!

Billy Taylor – Men’s Basketball Coach

Taylor, who brings 11 years of NCAA Division I head coaching experience to the College, is the 16th leader of the men’s basketball program. A University of Notre Dame graduate and former Fighting Irish player, Taylor has served as head coach both at Ball State University and at Lehigh University.

Taylor most recently worked with Coach Fran McCaffrey for three years at the University of Iowa as Director of Basketball Operations.  He coordinated travel and arranged the day-to-day activities of the Hawkeye’s men’s basketball program.  During all three seasons of Taylor’s tenure at Iowa, the program earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament, produced a first-team All-Big Ten member, and had a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Taylor arrived at Iowa after serving as head men’s basketball coach at Ball State University for six years (2007-13).  Under Taylor, the Cardinals finished first or second in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) West Division three times and advanced to the MAC Tournament semifinals twice.  The team produced nine All-Conference selections and had MAC All-Freshman Team honorees in five consecutive seasons.  Taylor also coached a Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award Finalist and John Wooden Citizenship Cup National Finalist.

“I am thrilled to receive the appointment as the new head men’s basketball coach at Belmont Abbey College,” Taylor said.  “I want to thank Abbot Placid, President Thierfelder, Athletic Director Stephen Miss, and all the members of the search committee for selecting me as the new leader of our basketball program.  Belmont Abbey has a rich tradition of basketball and academic success which I am now proud to be a part of.  In my career, I have been blessed with some amazing opportunities to work with talented student-athletes and faithful administrators.  I look forward to mentoring our student-athletes to be leaders on the basketball court, in the classroom, and in the community.”

Makiem Miller – Director of Campus Safety & Chief of Police

Miller brings 20 years of service in law enforcement having most recently served with the New Haven, CT police department. Miller also holds an MA in Criminal Justice from the American Military University and a BS in Criminal Justice from Sacred Heart University.

A native of West Haven, CT, Miller joined the Police Academy in June of 1996 and retired 20 years to the day before his official retirement year to join Belmont Abbey College. Miller, the first police officer in his family, graduated the academy and was assigned a walking beat on Congress Avenue in New Haven, where he would later buy a home. He served on that beat for three years before earning his detective’s badge. For 10 years as a detective, he worked narcotics, arson, general investigations and was in the Special Victim’s Unit. He became a District Manager of the Whalley-Edgewood-Beaver Hill District in 2013 until he retired as a Lieutenant.

“Going through the hiring process, I really appreciated the great respect and ultimately the opportunity to be a leader in this professional community and family. I knew right away this is where I wanted to be. The Campus Police Department has an outstanding staff with great potential for growth to serve this college community with the utmost integrity and professionalism,” said Miller. “I am really looking forward to meeting all the students this coming fall semester.”

Amanda Bambury – Director of Residence Life

Before coming to Belmont Abbey College, Amanda completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Notre Dame, where she studied French and Italian literature. As a native of Colorado, she is glad to be in North Carolina, once again surrounded by natural beauty. This year marks her fourth year of working in residence life at a Catholic institution and she is very grateful to join the Belmont Abbey community.

“I view residence life as the crossroads of all aspects that make up a student’s college experience, and as such I greatly look forward to working with my colleagues at the Abbey to serve our students. My vision of residence life is one centered on community building and I hope that, during their time at the Abbey and in the residence halls, students will learn what it means to form a supportive community, as well as how to love and serve their neighbors.”

Thomas Henry – Admissions Counselor

Native of Davidson, NC, Thomas was born and raised in Charlotte area. He graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2012, where he Majored in History with a Minor in Business. Thomas is an avid sports fan, especially the Carolina Panthers. His first few years out of college were spent working in the sports industry, but he is excited to transition his career to higher education.

“I’m excited to join the Belmont-Abbey College staff and to meet all prospective students in my territory to help and assist them with the next step in their lives!”
