Facial oils have been a well kept secret by beauty insiders for years and recently the benefits of using them are becoming better known. At first you might not think that rubbing oil into your face will help you achieve smooth, youthful and glowing skin, but we’re finding products claiming just that popping up all over! One such product is Nude’s ProGenius Treatment Oil, but we want to know if it really works!

The Claims
According to Nude their research found that people who applied ProGenius Omega oil had a 36% decrease in the appearance of wrinkles a mere hour after application and also a 25% increase in hydration after 6 hours (which remained high for 24 hours). These are pretty hefty claims, but Nude’s ProGenius Treatment oil does come with the price tag to match at a whopping £58 for a 30ml bottle, it’s not exactly cheap. Is it really worth the investment ? We’ll find out if the science hold up and then you can decide for yourself if the product is in fact pure genius.

The Science behind the Bottle
This product contains a whopping  15 different types of plant based oils, ranging from the familiar faces like jojoba, almond and macadamia oils to the more obscure sea buckthorn, camelina and borago oils.

Let’s start with the unfamiliar Sea buckthorn oil which has been used topically to treat both acne and psoriasis in the past. Studies show that sea buckthorn oil can be applied to burn wounds to improve healing and as an antibacterial to prevent infection and also has been proven to have anti-sebum secreting effects.

Another ingredient that helps to prevent excess sebum production is jojoba oil. Jojoba oil is widely regarded as non-comedogenic, which means that it shouldn’t block pores and is a very similar in structure to the sebum that skin naturally produces. One theory is that jojoba oil “tricks” the skin into thinking that it has produced enough sebum, thereby reducing its production. This is great news to those of you who are dubious about applying an oil to oily skin as it can actually help to reduce the amount of oil your skin produces!

Camelina, Sweet almond, Jojoba, Macadamia and Borago oils are all rich in fatty acids especially omega-3 and omega-6 (hence the name). Fatty acids are vital to the function of our cells as they help to form membranes and when applied topically to the skin they have fab moisturising effects! Fatty acids help to keep the outer layer of the skin (the strateum corneum) hydrated which as a result can make the skin appear plumper and more youthful. These oils also help to form a thin film over the skin’s surface preventing transepidermal water loss (water loss through the skin), packing that extra moisture punch!

Nude advertise that omega-9 is present in this product and acts against premature ageing, and the rosemary extract in this product might go some way to answering that!

Rosemary is one of the most commonly used herbs in the kitchen, so what on earth is it doing here in this product?  Rosmarinic acid has been found to have antibacterial properties and is rich in active antioxidants including flavonoids. Antioxidants help to prevent ageing by absorbing free radicals, therefore preventing further oxidative stress in the skin which damages the skin contributing to ageing. Tocopheryl acetate, more commonly known as vitamin E is another potent antioxidant which can be found in this product, which adds to the anti-aging effect.

Whilst Nude ProGenius Omega Oil does have these antioxidants, this products main focus is certainly hydration through its numerous oils, which fight dehydrated skin and help plump out fine lines. If you’re looking for prevention of premature ageing, we’d recommend using it in combination with a focussed anti-ageing product.

The Verdict
There were actually many more active ingredient packed into this product but we couldn’t possibly talk about them all! Because ProGenius comes with a hefty price tag, at £58 for a 30ml bottle, we were looking for some worthwhile ingredients before recommending!  This product seems to live up to its claims in giving you “smooth, youthful, luminous skin” as it is full of hydrating, ingredients to keep your skin fresh and moisturised. We think ProGenius Omega oil could be a great choice if you feel like indulging yourself and giving your skin a well-deserved treat!
