Brian Gauthier, CEO and Administrator of A Family Member HomeCare, a South Florida home health care agency serving Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, was bestowed with the “Heart of the Community” award from Volunteer Broward in 2010 for his work with Hospice by the Sea's Memorial RegionalCare Center in Hollywood.
Hospice by the Sea, Inc. is a not-for-profit, community-based provider of hospice care, palliative care, caregiver support, bereavement counseling and home health agency services throughout Broward and Palm Beach counties in South Florida.
“I am honored to be among those individuals who volunteer their time and talents to our community with passion and commitment,” Mr. Gauthier said.
Volunteering for a hospice is not for everyone, he admits, but for him, it invokes a deep sense of appreciation for life and the people for whom he can provide comfort in their final days.
Initially, he began volunteering with Hospice by the Sea because of the significant number of hospice patients seen by A Family Member HomeCarecaregivers throughout Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. “I wanted to find a way to do more for these people and their families,” he recalls.
At the outset, he volunteered by visiting the hospice patients in their homes, providing emotional solace and companionship to them and their families, and sometimes even grocery shopping. However, Mr. Gauthier, a hard-charging home health agency executive, career entrepreneur and Health Sector Policy Management MBA, wanted to provide more hands-on assistance, so he began volunteering at Hospice by the Sea’sacute care facility, which provides around-the-clock skilled supervision to 18 patients at a time.
There, Mr. Gauthier is able to lend his professional experience by directly assisting the Certified Nurse on duty with patient care, feeding, charts and other medically related materials, as well as perform an array of administrative tasks, such as answering the telephone.
“A lot of people don’t want to be around those who are dying,” he admitted, “but I’m perpetually reminded of the value of life while we’re able to live it. That is pounded into me every time I’m there.”
Nominated for Volunteer Broward’s “Heart of the Community” by Hospice by the Sea officials, Mr. Gauthier continues his work there, along with serving on the Board of Directors of the Meyerhoff Center, a senior center that has been serving South Florida elders in Hollywood, Florida for over 30 years. There, he has helped to guide the organization through a major business transition.
Volunteer Broward’s “Heart of the Community” honors individuals who have been identified from among Volunteer Broward’s 600 affiliated non-profit agencies as having made a difference in the Broward community.
