The Calgary nonprofit organizations have received the funding in the first round of grants made available through the province’s Special Flood Recovery Program.
“Nonprofit organizations provide essential programs and services for families and communities,” said Minister of Culture Heather Klimchuk in a release. “This funding will not only assist organizations with reconstruction and renovation projects, it will help address the increased demand put on programs as a result of the 2013 floods. It will help our communities continue to rebuild.”
A total of $4 million has been made available through the program to assist the nonprofit and voluntary sector with flood recovery initiatives including $1 million in 2013-14 and $3 million through Budget 2014. The province says the funding is intended to address costs associated with flood impacts not covered by insurance or the Disaster Recovery Program.
The five Calgary nonprofit organizations receiving the flood recovery aid include $242,100 to the Southern Alberta Hostelling Association; $200,000 for facility renovation and operational costs to the Calgary Drop-In and Rehab Centre Society; $75,000 to help offset costs from additional client services during the flood to the Fresh Start Addictions Centre; $75,000 for staff positions to the Calgary YMCA and $75,000 for the Calgary Zoo’s rebuilding costs.
Funding for the Special Flood Recovery Program is administered by Alberta Culture using criteria established for the existing Community Facility Enhancement Program and Community Initiatives Program.
