Chinook Arc designed by Creative Machines

Chinook Arc will be an interactive public art installation designed to remind Calgarians of the city’s warm chinook winds.

The City of Calgary’s newest public art installation project is interactive and will use colour and light to remind visitors of Calgary’s warm chinook winds during dark winter months.

The Chinook Arc was designed by artists with Creative Machines.  It is currently being assembled at Barb Scott Park, formerly Beltline Park, at the corner of 12 Ave and 9 St SW.

The sculpture, that it’s creators say was inspired by the historic Beltline streetcar loop, will be highly visible along 12 Ave SW.

The City says after extensive community consultation it learned that residents were looking for public art to be included in the development of the new park.

City of Calgary public art funds were used to fund the piece.  The final design was chosen by a panel of five Calgarians who represented both the neighbourhood and the local arts community.

The total budget for the Chinook Arc is $370,000.

The new Barb Scott Park is named after one of Calgary’s longest serving aldermen, who represented Ward 8 for seven terms.

Barb Scott recently passed away at the age of 83.
