“Training in Arbitration will enhance our capacity and generate confidence among businessmen and investors in ADR” said Law Minister Anisul Huq MP while addressing as Chief Guest at the Inaugural Ceremony of Training of Trainers in Arbitration organized by Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) at a local hotel today.

With over 2.7 million cases pending in our courts, the foreign companies and investors feel discouraged to enter into commercial deals with Bangladesh, he observed. Government has already made substantive amendments in some of our major acts like Civil Procedure Code, Artha Rin Adalat Ain, Customs, VAT and Income Tax Act making mediation mandatory. He lauded the role of the Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) for promoting the cause of ADR in the country.

The five-day Training of Trainers from 7-11 December 2014 is organized by BIAC in collaboration with International Law Institute (ILI), Washington DC. The programme was supported by International Finance Corporation (IFC).

Mr. Mahbubur Rahman, Chairman, BIAC Council and President, ICC-B chaired the function. In his speech he advised the participants to avail full advantage of this high profile training which is being provided at a subsidized cost. He appealed to the business community to adopt BIAC Model Clause in their commercial contracts and urged upon government through Hon’ble Law Minister to consider using BIAC Arbitration Rules and BIAC Mediation Rules in governmental contracts wherever possible.

Dr. Toufiq Ali Chief Executive of BIAC said forty trainees are attending this ToT. Most of them are lawyers, either practising in the courts, or working with government departments, law firms, banks, or in Universities. Those who qualify at this session should be able to conduct training sessions on arbitration in future, he hoped.

Among others Rokia Afzal Rahman President MCCI, Masrur M. Reaz Programme Manager of IFC, David Branson- one of the trainers from International Law Institute (ILI), Washington DC and two former trainees of BIAC Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury and Shireen Scheik Mainuddin also spoke.
