Next to bright colored lipstick, my favorite makeup is black eyeliner. Never mind if I forget to apply blush or eyeshadow; as long as I have my deep noir eyeliner on, I feel decent enough to face the world after a sleepless night or stressful day.

I tested a lot of eyeliners from different brands for the past few years, and even traveled with them to snowplowed and sun scorched places. I judged them based on color quality, ease of use, and long wearability. Here are 10 (in no particular order) that stood out.

Kate by Kanebo Super Sharp Liner in BK-1

1. Kate by Kanebo Super Sharp Liner

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: I discovered this Japanese brand during a trip to Hong Kong. The Super Sharp Liner’s fine tip is perfect for thin applications, and I used it ‘til the last drop.

Naris Up Wink Up Maxigrade Eyeliner SP Liquid Black

2. Naris Up Wink Up Maxigrade Eyeliner

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: IMHO, Asian makeup brands are the best when it comes to black liquid eyeliners. When I spotted Naris Wink Up in a drugstore in Singapore, I followed my gut and purchased the liquid black eyeliner. It didn’t disappoint with its easy-glide and quick dry formula.

Benefit They’re Real! Push Up Liner

3. Benefit They’re Real! Push Up Liner

Eyeliner type: gel pen

Notes: Thanks to the exclusive Benefit BDJ Box in November 2014, I discovered this gem. I never liked gel eyeliners because I often forget to screw on the cap immediately, so it dries out fast. Benefit’s version made me change my mind. With this product, all you have to do is click to dispense the right amount of gel liner and apply it using the angled tip.

Max Factor Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in 20 Black

4. Max Factor Kohl Eyeliner Pencil

Eyeliner type: pencil

Notes: Back when I was an editorial assistant for an entertainment magazine, I used Max Factor’s Kohl pencil to line my lower rims for a smokey look. It’s soft and gentle on my eye area, and perfect for rookies.

Essence “I Love Punk” Jumbo Eyeliner Pen

5. Essence Jumbo Pen

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: This easy grip eyeliner pen is great for beginners and those who can’t get enough of the pinup girl look. Unlike the other Essence eyeliners I’ve tried, this one doesn’t smudge and stays on longer.

IN2IT Line Define Liquid Eyeliner in LD 01 Very Black

6. IN2IT Line Define Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: One of the makeup brands my sister and I discovered in college, IN2IT suited our budget and beauty needs. My favorite from their collection is the Line Define Liquid Eyeliner, which has a nylon brush that you dip into a pot of silky black ink before applying it on your lids.

MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack

7. MAC Fluidline

Eyeliner type: gel

Notes: My sister Karen’s favorite, MAC’s Fluidline liner is easy to apply and doesn’t smudge after application. The only problem with most gel liners is that it dries up easily, but my fellow Beauty Minister Nicole Romero has the solution to that!

K-Palette 1-Day Magic Liquid Eyeliner in Super Black

8. K-Palette 1-Day Magic Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: This wonder eyeliner from Japan is a cult favorite. It’s waterproof and has a flat brush that makes it easy to apply and build up on. The super black shade is perfect for getting that precise cat-eye look.

Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen in 01 Blackest Black

9. Revlon Colorstay Liquid Eye Pen

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: Like a felt-tip Sharpie, this liquid eye pen is for intermediate or advanced makeup users who are used to lining their rims. It doesn’t perform as well as its Asian counterparts. When I used the “blackest black” shade, it came out light brown-black. Its redeeming factor is that the pen didn’t dry up fast.

Heroine Make Kiss Me Smooth Liquid Eyeliner in Black #01

10. Heroine Make Kiss Me Smooth Liquid Eyeliner

Eyeliner type: liquid

Notes: Aside from the brand’s eye-catching princess-y packaging, Heroine Make is famous for its long-lasting makeup offerings. The best thing I like about their black liquid eyeliner is the 0.1 mm fine tip. Despite my (ahem!) expertise in applying the cat eye, I have a hard time drawing a super thin line on my upper lashes. It’s hard to find a liquid pen liner that’s thin enough to attain this basic look, and I found the solution in Heroine Make.

I can’t wait to review more eyeliners in the coming months and share my report with you. In the meantime, I want to know what your personal favorites are, Bellas! Share your eyeliner finds in the comments section below.
