Please join us the Bethlehem Healthy Kids Committee in celebrating Farm to You Fest 2015. This is the seventh year the district has participated in the statewide celebration of local farms and food. There are lots of ways to be involved, both at school and at home.

IN ALL SCHOOLS…

Squash Hunger Produce Drive: Each school in the district will have collection bins for soft and hard produce all week. We are encouraging items such as apples, eggplants, squash and potatoes, since we would like the items to last. Lettuce and strawberries, for instance, can be quite perishable. How often does your student get to bring a whole eggplant or squash in their backpack? Volunteers will deliver the produce each day to McCarroll’s Delmar Marketplace, where Capital Roots (formerly Capital District Community Gardens) will weigh and collect the produce to be delivered to local shelters and food pantries. In 2014, our district donated a recored-breaking 1,659 pounds of fresh produce. Let’s top that impressive amount this year!

Farmers Market Scavenger Hunt: Please join us on Saturday, October 10 at the Delmar Farmers Market, located at the Bethlehem Central Middle School, for a scavenger hunt! The market is open 9am to 1pm. This is a great chance to meet a farmer and ask him or her questions about what they grow and why eating locally grown produce is so important. Prizes have been generously donated by farmers market vendors. Please hand in your scavenger hunt checklist that day or at your school the following week for a chance to win a prize. Here is the link to the checklist. We will have some copies available that day at our Healthy Kids Committee table.

Try School Lunch: Did you know that many of the fruits and veggies in our school lunches come from local farms? Why not give these farm fresh lunches a try?

Pack a Farm Fresh Snack: Pack whole fruits or veggies for snacks this week. Sliced apples and pears, cucumbers, carrots…all in season in NY now!

AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL…

Salad for Kids Day: Friday, October 9 during the middle school lunch periods. You can’t get more local than the produce grown in the middle school garden! Students will get a chance to enjoy a fresh picked salad, served by Healthy Kids Committee and Garden Club volunteers. It is always a popular event! View photos from the 2014 Salad for Kids Day.
