The J. Murrey Atkins Library at UNC Charlotte is seeking a Head of Assessment to oversee and participate in assessment opportunities throughout the university and promote a data-informed approach to achieving strategic goals. The Head of Assessment promotes a culture of assessment across the J. Murrey Atkins Library by coordinating a comprehensive assessment program that includes quantitative, qualitative, and usability practices. This position ensures the collection, analysis, and reporting of both qualitative and quantitative data; consults on assessment methods; and provides training on various assessment tools and techniques. The work of the Assessment Team enables the J. Murrey Atkins Library to document impact on our patrons, as well as make evidence-based decisions to continuously improve programs, services, and spaces.

The Head of Assessment coordinates the design and implementation of assessment projects using a variety of methodologies (i.e., surveys, focus groups, interviews, observations, statistical analysis), the collection of quantitative and qualitative data, and the creation of reports that include analysis, findings, recommendations and other products as appropriate. The Head of Assessment is responsible for gathering and reporting data to local, regional, and national entities. The position supervises a three- FTE unit that performs usability studies, anthropological research, statistical analysis, data visualization, and other assessment activities.

The Head of Assessment and the Assessment Team provide expertise and training on assessment-related topics. In addition, the Head of Assessment leads a library wide assessment committee that coordinates all assessment activities. This position also serves on campus-wide assessment committees, collaborates with other campus groups on assessment activities, and participates actively in professional organizations locally, regionally, and nationally.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Leads the assessment team in the integration of assessment and evidence- based decision-making across the Library.

Coordinates the planning, development, and implementation of systems to collect, store, process, and disseminate data for decision-making and reporting.

Analyzes and reports quantitative and qualitative data gathered from various sources in the Library and across campus.

Collaborates on assessment research projects across the Library and supports assessment-focused data collection, analysis, and dissemination of findings.

Collaborates on assessment projects across the campus that display library impact.

Explores and communicates new assessment methods, including analysis and data collection to library staff.

Coordinates a team that provides consultation to library staff on assessment methods including usability testing, data collection and analysis.

Heads the library assessment committee.

Develops and implements internal training on assessment methods, data collection and analysis, and technologies.

Works closely with the Technology and Digital Strategies department on business intelligence systems, assessment data storage, and data security.

Coordinates the data collection for annual reports, strategic plans, and surveys.

Provides expertise to library staff in support of their research.

Ensures a collegial, team-oriented work environment.

Displays excellent customer service and interpersonal skills when working with patrons and colleagues.

Plans for, hires, develops, and manages reporting personnel, including faculty, staff, student assistants, interns, and non-student temps.

Completes job performance evaluations for direct reports.

Ensures that all employees are kept up-to-date on knowledge and skills needed to perform assigned tasks.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

Serve as liaison to designated academic departments to provide instruction, research, and collection support; participate in the provision of in-person and virtual research services and of instruction for first-year undergraduate students.

Engage in professional service and scholarly contributions encompassing best practices and innovation in research, reference, and liaison services; participate in committees and faculty governance in the library and on campus.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements

ALA-accredited Master’s in Library or Information Science, or other relevant advanced degree.

A minimum of 2 years of professional experience in an academic library, or equivalent professional experience.

Academic coursework in statistical methods, qualitative methods, and research design.

Documented experience in the development and implementation of assessment strategies in libraries, higher education, or other complex organizations.

Experience using a variety of quantitative and qualitative approaches to assessment such as user-centered design, ethnographic research, usability studies, or evaluation design.

Demonstrated ability to perform data analyses and to present complicated information in easy to understand formats, e.g. data visualization, charts, tables, etc.

Working knowledge of data visualization and statistical software, e.g, Tableau, Gephi, SPSS, SAS, etc.

Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Education, Skills and Training Experience:

A minimum of 2 years of management and/or supervisory experience.

Experience collecting and reporting statistics in a complex organization.

Experience with SQL and database structure.

Experience in project management.

Experience with supporting accreditation efforts in higher education.

Experience with national library assessment programs, e.g., LibQUAL+, Project Information Literacy, NSSE, Value of Academic Libraries.
