Duties & Responsibilities

The Director of Learning and Teaching Services will lead the learning and teaching services supporting Harvard College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). The Director will work across the libraries’ culture of collaboration and user-focused innovation to further develop learning and teaching programs that span the disciplines and academic departments in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). The Director also collaborates across Harvard Library including the libraries supporting Harvard’s schools to further develop cross-school initiatives, build staff skills, and strengthen a collegial and innovative culture for learning and teaching.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research, Teaching and Learning, the Director brings together, develops and coordinates the efforts of a dedicated and high-performing library staff across FAS libraries supporting all disciplines in building students’ learning experiences and research skills throughout the stages of undergraduate and graduate education. Working with FAS library heads and senior managers, the Director of Learning and Teaching Services provides leadership in assessing user experience and curricular needs, setting strategic directions and goals and evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives and programs.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Lead process for setting the strategic direction for learning and teaching in the FAS Libraries

Guided by FAS and library RTL goals, work in collaboration with FAS library heads and senior managers and the associate university librarian for RTL to design a cohesive RTL program, identify priorities and allocate resources to support learning and teaching.

Manage 18 A/P and Support Staff in the Services for Academic Programs department.

Liaise with Harvard College and GSAS heads of academic programs and student services to design, deliver and assess library services and build upon existing connections between the FAS curricula and the libraries.

Coordinate and develop assessment practices for user experience and student learning outcomes within the FAS libraries’ RTL programs to inform evidence-based decision-making; lead and assess robust library programs and efforts to integrate literacies into the undergraduate major and graduate programs and lead the development of a Library Learning and Teaching Services portal and related online learning objects.

Collaborate with other Harvard Library colleagues in the development of Harvard-wide RTL initiatives and in supporting cross-school curricula, and in applying for and managing grants

Engage in research, scholarly publication, and professional service activities. Serve on Harvard Library and FAS libraries’ committees and task forces. Participate in local, regional, or national professional organizations; enrich professional expertise by attending conferences and continuing education opportunities.

Basic Qualifications

Advanced degree and record of scholarly accomplishment.

Significant teaching experience, in-person and/or online instruction.

Demonstrated experience leading a high performing team.

Experience with curriculum development and outcomes assessment of student learning.

Additional Qualifications

Knowledge of current pedagogical theory and practice.

Ability to work effectively, both independently and collaboratively, in a collegial environment.

Experience building partnerships to enhance learning and student success.

Demonstrated ability to engage intellectually with faculty and students in order to provide information services necessary for their academic endeavors.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Ability to collaborate effectively in a decentralized and matrix environment
