The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research & Learning

The Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Research & Learning provides leadership and direction for Humanities, Social Sciences, and Area Studies; Special Collections; East Asia; and the Sciences. The AUL ensures a coherent and responsive information and service environment for the highly interdisciplinary research and teaching needs of the campus and will take a leadership role in building new programs and partnerships that empower faculty and students, advance digital scholarship, extend the University’s impact, and ensure the Library evolves in response to a changing environment. The position is responsible for inspiring and maintaining a strategically-focused, collaborative, and highly knowledgeable staff, and nurturing an organizational culture of innovation, evidence-based investments, and responsive program development. Direct reports include the Director of the Science Libraries, Director of the Special Collections Research Center, Curator of the East Asian Collection, and the Director of Research and Teaching Support.

The AUL for Research & Learning strategically engages in campus-wide initiatives, consortial partnerships, and regional, state, national, and international programs; works with academic departments to align services proactively and effectively with current and emerging academic priorities; and identifies trends in higher education and research librarianship to inform strategies for providing innovative and transformative services to the University community.

Reporting directly to the University Librarian and serving with two other AULs as the Library’s senior leadership team, the AUL for Research & Learning works collaboratively to develop and implement library priorities that align with the mission and vision of the University, and contributes to Library-wide strategic planning, resource management, policies, and assessment.

The successful candidate must have a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (or equivalent advanced degree); a minimum of seven years of leadership, with a focus on the delivery of user-centered services, in managing units, departments, teams or projects in an academic research library; record of scholarly engagement and professional service, including presentations, publications, and committee service on campus, regional, or national-level organizations.

The Search Committee will evaluate candidates’ record and academic accomplishments in order to determine their understanding of the scholarly process;  their ability to value and encourage diversity, inspire, build trust, lead organizational and cultural change, foster innovation, and empower staff growth; their ability to interact collegially and effectively, both orally and in writing, with wide and diverse constituencies including faculty, students, alumni, donors, and members of the wider community; their experience in financial management; their organizational and analytical skills; and their knowledge of technology and its application for innovation in service.

The University of Chicago Library is a center of intense intellectual inquiry. The Library participates in two extended access programs, BorrowDirect in collaboration with the IvyPlus and UBorrow in collaboration with the Big Ten Academic Alliance, that provide expedited interlibrary loans and on-site visitor privileges. The popular Scan & Deliver program provides faculty, students, and staff with scans of book chapters and articles from the general collections.
