Bay News Network, Visakhapatnam: The apex body of dental education in the country Dental Council of India (DCI) is committed to spread the oral health awareness among the public and taking new initiatives particularly made a mandatory regulation that each doctor must serve in a rural area at least three months, this was announced by DCI President Dr.Debendu Mazumdar here on Thursday at GITAM University. He attended as chief guest to inaugurate the 16th Prosthodontic PG Students Convention jointly organized by Indian Prosthodontic Society, AP Prosthodontic Forum and GITAM Dental College and Hospital. While inaugurating the three day convention he said that the DCI suggesting that each dental college and Hospital must establish a satellite center in rural area to offer free service to people. He felt that this was made compulsory in view of poor public awareness on oral health in the country. The satellite centers will be monitored by the concerned dental college, he added. He said that the council also planning to strengthen the dental education in the form of strengthening the teaching staff ratio in colleges. He said that the council is preparing new initiatives like including forensic medicine in BDS third year and subjects like Advance Life Support (ALS), Basic Live Support (BLS) courses in MDS level.
The GITAM President Dr.MVVSMurthi in his address on the occasion observed that the country needs more number of dental professionals to treat the oral health diseases. He advised that the DCI can advise the state governments to recruit dental doctors in PHCs. GITAM University Vice-Chancellor Prof.G.Subrahmanayam, GITAM Dental College and Hospital Principal Prof.K.Gangadhar Prasad, DCI Executive Committee Member Prof.Satish kumar Reddy, Indian Posthodontic Society President Dr.K.Mahinder Reddy, Secretary V.Rangarajan, Convention Convener Dr.Y.Ravishankar, Prof.Shilpa shetty and others participated in the inaugural session.
As part of the convention the organizers created various sand sculptures of Prosthodontics at Rushikonda Beach for public awareness.
