FEATURING PAUL HOLLYWOOD, MASTERCHEF AUSTRALIA’S GARY MEHIGAN AND HAYDEN QUINN AS WELL AS MICKEY & MINNIE MOUSE
They’d feature on any South African What’s Hot list. MasterChef has captured the imagination of the country while, as with the rest of the world, baking is the new Pilates; cake is now cool and biscuits are brilliant!

The new look Good Food & Wine Show comes to Johannesburg from September 21 to 24 and is bang on trend with food and cooking fashions.

This year the show will create its own MasterChef magic thanks to MasterChef Australia judge Gary Mehigan and surfer, TV presenter and blogger Hayden Quinn from MasterChef Australia Series 3. National Braai Day in SA falls on Heritage Day on September 24. Australians take their barbecues as seriously as South Africans do their braaiing and Quinn will be showing how to do it, Oz style!

It captivated TV viewers and spawned a host of similar competitions and so the GF&WS is delighted to welcome Great British Bake-Off judge Paul Hollywood to the show.

Youngsters can meet Disney icons Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the Magic of Healthy Living Disney Theatre which teaches them all about healthy living and eating, a must in a time where childhood obesity has reached record levels.

Children will also be able to have fun in the kitchen in the Woolworths Junior MasterChef Kitchen.

Paul Hollywood says he loves the fact that he’s part of a great baking revival. He loves teaching the nation how to bake, which is what his own father did for him.

He says: “I want to pass on my secrets to people who are going to say, ‘I have realised that I love baking, and now I’m going to make my bread and sell it at the local farmers’ market’, or who might say, ‘I am going to use the local Post Office in our village to sell my cakes.’ I want to give them that little bit of fire.”

He did not realise that the Great British Bake Off would be such a hit. “ For some years I had been knocking on doors wanting to do a baking programme – and I had done a few – but when they told me about this one, and that it was going to be prime time on BBC2, I went, ‘Are you serious?’

“When they assured me they were, I was like, and ‘This is right up my alley! This is what I do!’ But I had no idea people would find this baking lark so interesting. I mean, I love it, it’s part of what I do, but actually everyone’s taken it to heart. It’s become a national treasure, which is incredible.”

Gary Mehigan is delighted be coming to South Africa following in the footsteps of his co-judge George Calombaris who came to last year’s show. He talks about his love affair with MasterChef: “I made a promise to myself that I would do it for as long as I love and enjoy it. I’m a restaurateur and a businessman, so I don’t need it in my life, but I love it. Doing television is remarkable and interesting and amazing – there is nothing like television, and it’s kind of irreplaceable. I do love it. And what I love the most is that as a chef, you can ostracise yourself, you can isolate yourself in your own restaurant, and what I find with this show is that it exposes and inspires me with all these other people – my peers and colleagues, the contestants on the show – it’s like my other workplace, and I find that really, really inspiring at the moment!

“I feel more connected to food now than I ever have in my life. I look at the contestants and dishes they cook and think, ‘God, that’s a good idea. I love that bit. I love that element’.”

Previous MasterChef Australia contestants Adam Liaw, Alvin Quah and Callum Hann have proved hugely popular with Joburg audiences. Now comes Hayden Quinn who is making a splash in the food world.

“Food is one of my passions but only part of my life; my food focus is not so overwhelming that if I forget about all those other amazing things that I like to do such as surfing. If I didn’t have multiple passions, I wouldn’t be me. For me life is about balance and being able to get outside and have a go at everything, experience it all. Playing into lifestyle, food is about nourishing your body.  I lead a very active lifestyle and having good, healthy and fresh food is always important.”

All the visiting chefs will be staying at the stylish Palazzo Montecasino in Fourways.

Locally sourced food and children’s nutrition are the leading trends in 2013, according to the US National Restaurant Association’s annual “What’s hot 2013 chef survey” and the Good Food & Wine Show is bang up-to-date with these global predictions. It will present two new theatres in Johannesburg this year – the Little Chefs Kitchen and The Real Food Theatre, a fully interactive experience covering sustainability and home grown produce.

The Good Food & Wine Show is more interactive than ever before – the whole family can interact with local and global foodie personalities who are showcasing their culinary skills while exhibitors have the opportunity to communicate directly with their target market.

The Good Food & Wine Show is being partnered with Fiera Milano, the world’s leading Exhibition Company.  This is the recipe for all that’s fabulous in the kitchen! Don’t miss it.

GOOD FOOD AND WINE SHOW CHEF BIOGRAPHIES

PAUL HOLLYWOOD

The son of baker, Paul originally trained as a sculptor before his father persuaded him to join the family business.

He went onto become head baker at some of the most exclusive hotels including Cliveden, Chester Grosvenor and The Dorchester where he gained a reputation as an innovator and one of the country’s finest artisan bakers.

Following his apprenticeship and success at some of the UK’s top hotels, Paul took the opportunity to travel extensively through Cyprus, Egypt and Jordan, visiting remote villages to discover ancient techniques for baking bread and, on one occasion, travelling to a Bedouin encampment and baking in the desert on an upturned cooking pot.

On his return to the England, he launched the Paul Hollywood Artisan Bread Company and now supplies Waitrose, amongst others, with his own branded bread.

Paul began his media career on Carlton Food Network and Taste in 2002 where he co-presented two TV series with James Martin.

Paul has been a judge on The Great British Bake Off for three series, judged Junior Bake Off and celebrity versions for Sports Relief and Comic Relief all alongside Mary Berry. His new series Paul Hollywood’s Bread aired in the UK on the BBC earlier this year. He also makes regular appearances for BBC and ITV.

In 2005 he authored a best-selling book ‘100 Great Breads’ which has been published in 10 countries and seven languages, and was voted ‘top bread and pastry book’ by the Gourmand Academy. His second book ‘How to Bake’, published by Bloomsbury, came out in summer 2012 and quickly went on to the top of the bestseller lists. The book to accompany his Bread series came out in February 2013.

Paul makes regular contributions to The BBC Good Food Magazine, Olive Magazine, Waitrose Magazine and has written for both The Observer and The Daily Mail.

Paul advises and trains at corporate level, working extensively with the Flour Advisory Board as well as hosting and presenting large demonstrations and award ceremonies.

GARY MEHIGAN

With his award-winning establishments Fenix and Maribyrnong Boathouse among some of the finest dining experiences in Melbourne, Gary Mehigan’s credentials command attention. His natural leadership qualities became evident from the first season of MasterChef Australia as he puts that country’s finest amateur cooks through their paces.

Having received training in world class restaurants, including The Connaught and Le Souffle in London in his early years, Gary has been based in Melbourne since 1991. He has headed the kitchen in some of the city’s most prominent restaurants, including Browns, Burnham Beeches Country House and Hotel Sofitel before opening the award winning Fenix in 2000.

Before MasterChef, Mehigan was teaching Australians to cook through the LifeStyle Channel’s Boy’s Weekend and Good Chef Bad Chef, and via a number of best-selling cookbooks including Gary Mehigan’s Comfort Food and Your Place or Mine with fellow MasterChef judge George Calombaris.

He is also a judge on the popular Junior MasterChef Australia currently airing in South Africa on DStv.

HAYDEN QUINN

Hayden Quinn became a household name in Australia and South Africa as a contestant in Series 3 of MasterChef Australia. For three months, MasterChef episodes introduced the diverse talents and the loveable nature of the Aussie surfer to living rooms around the world.

Now, Hayden is a regular face on Australian television, the author of a top rating eBook series and 2012 Cleo Bachelor of the Year. Hayden is also a proud ambassador for the iconic Australian brand Bonds. Hayden’s energetic and amicable personality makes him one of Australia’s favourite media personalities.

A love of the ocean, travel, people and all things ‘food’ led Hayden to a Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology, a career as a professional lifeguard, extensive world travel and of course a life-changing MasterChef application.

In addition to all of his commitments this year Hayden is also an ambassador for the Starlight Foundation and also Melanoma Institute Australia.
