CELL C Community Cup runners-up Jonsson College Rovers became the seventh team to qualify for the 2014 tournament when they claimed their eighth straight KZN Moor Cup league title last Saturday with a 62-20 away win over Varsity College.
It was also unbeaten Rovers’ 13th consecutive win in the league, and the Durbanites now join Brakpan (Falcons), Roodepoort (Golden Lions), Sishen (Griquas), GAP Despatch (defending champions), Bloemfontein Crusaders (Free State) and newcomers Centurion (Blue Bulls) in the second edition of SARU’s elite tournament for non-university clubs.
And in Cape Town, Hamiltons took a big step towards 2014 qualification when they completed the double over Durbanville-Bellville, winning 26-13 in a Western Province Super League A match in Green Point to go with their 48-13 away drubbing of their northern suburbs rivals in the first round in May.
Hammies, with 45 points, now lead the 10-team league by a single point from Durbell, with Maties and UCT in third and fourth place respectively. The two Varsity Cup sides however have the luxury of having played three matches fewer following their mid-year break, and both student outfits will want to hit the ground running after their long layoff when they face Belhar and Bellville respectively on Saturday.
Elsewhere around the country, league winners Witbank Ferro’s will host Nelspruit and Malelane will travel to Middelburg in the Mpumalanga Buscor League semi-finals on Saturday, with the final to take place at Mbombela Stadium on 10 August.
Up north, newly-crowned Falcons champions Brakpan upset Blue Bulls Carlton League winners Tuks 26-19 at their fortress of Bosman Stadium to kick off their cross-border Predator League Pool A campaign in style.
The Predator League is divided into a Cup and Plate section and features the top 24 clubs from the Leopards, Golden Lions, Falcons and Blue Bulls, including four Varsity Cup sides (Wits, UJ, Pukke, Tuks) and six Community Cup teams in Brakpan, Roodepoort, Pretoria Police, Centurion, Raiders and Rustenburg Impala.
Boksburg, who lost to Brakpan in the Falcons final, ran out 29-26 winners over the Blue Bulls’ Community Cup qualifiers, Centurion, while there was further drama in Pool B in Potchefstroom where NWU Pukke and Raiders drew 38-all. Rustenburg Impala beat Wits 35-32 in a nail-biting Pool C clash while UJ saw off the challenge of Pretoria Police in Pool D with a 33-22 win.
