In The Hollywood Reporter's Cannes review, Toni Erdmann was called the "best 162-minute German comedy you'll ever see."

Adam McKay and Will Ferrell, along with Jessica Elbuam, will produce the new pic through Gloria Sanchez Productions.

Toni Erdmann writer-director Maren Ade will executive produce the remake, alongside original producers Jonas Dornbach and Janine Jackowski.

A frequenter of Los Angeles Lakers games, Nicholson, who has won Oscars for his roles in As Good as It Gets, Terms of Endearment and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, was believed to have entered into a self-imposed retirement from Hollywood. His last film was James L. Brooks' 2010 ensemble rom-com How Do You Know?, in which he starred opposite Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon. Prior to that, the actor starred in 2007's The Bucket List. Nicholson is repped by Bresler Kelly and Kleinberg Lange.

Wiig, who was recently seen in the Ghostbusters remake, is set to star in Alexander Payne's Downsizing, alongside Matt Damon. She is repped by UTA.
