Rapala’s summer workout plan, Scott Martin gives FLW AOY acceptance speech, Aaron Martens saves drowning kid, Advanced Angler gets raw and more.

Scott Martin AOY Address

Good excerpts from the speech.

Speaking about his competitors:

“When I said, ‘we did it’, I mean it. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I thank you for being my friends and helping me, because that’s what this sport is about. It’s about learning and getting better and I could not have won the Angler of the Year without the help and support of my friends.”

About his upbringing:

“I joke about it all the time, I say I was born in a Ranger bass boat, but in all honesty, that’s probably pretty close to being true.”

Advanced Angler Raw from FLW Cup

Advanced Angler is always on the scene at the biggest bass fishing events of the year providing fans raw footage that brings the emotion of the tournament to the forefront. The video is presented as it is shot and uploaded immediately – no editing, no long waits. Good day or bad, when an angler recaps his day the poker face is out the window; whatever their emotional state, you can see it in their expressions and hear it in their voice. No time for them to mentally come to terms with what that means for their chances of taking home bass fishing’s richest tournament purse. Pretty cool.

Martens Saves Boy

After winning his second Bassmaster Elite Series event of the season, Aaron Martens still had another task at hand Sunday afternoon. While recapping his victory with BASS media, Martens saw a young boy fall off the dock and begin to panic as he struggled to keep his head above water. Martens saw the event unfold and was quick to act. He immediately made contact with the boy and instructed him to remain calm as he trolled over to him and eventually pulled him out of the water and into the boat.

Of the incident Martens said:

“The boy was standing on the dock, casting a jig around and he was pretty accurate too. He was hitting some good spots. I think it was a 3/8oz jig, probably a 3/8 or 1/2oz cobra head style, I’m not sure. It looked like the hook wasn’t that sharp, he should have sharpened it probably, I would have. He didn’t have a trailer on it, but sometimes that works better, but this week I think he would have done better with a trailer. Probably a little craw style, a Strike King Rage Chunk maybe. When he fell in he broke the water with his hands first. That’s important. I always break the water with my hands because then you don’t get that sting feeling. When he got his head above water he looked to the west, which a lot of people do, but it was afternoon and the sun sets in the west, so he had sun in his eyes, that’s why you always look for help to the east in the afternoon, but then again, if I had been to the east I might have had glare in my eyes. It wouldn’t have bothered me though, I have good Solar Bat sunglasses and I’ve trained my eyes to look into the sun, it’s tricky, but you can do it if you practice really hard and don’t look directly into the sun. You want to look at a spot kind of away from the sun and use your peripheral vision to see the shadow and then you can slowly start to focus a bit. Yeah, so I went and picked him up and I went to the left side of him, his right side, because people are statistically more likely to be right hand dominate, plus I saw him on the dock casting with a right hand reel. Some people reel with the other hand, and I’ve tried it, but most people reel with their dominate hand. You can do both though. I’ve timed myself and I’m .2 seconds quicker reaching the reel knob with my right hand. Once I got him on board he was fine though.”

In all seriousness, Martens awareness of his surroundings helped avoid a possibly tragic situation. People drown all the time within easy swimming distance of docks, shore or boats because they simply panic and lose their ability to think logically – and for a 7 year old boy, who knows if he would have made it back in.

From Bassmaster:

Martens said the boy lost his sunglasses and dropped several of the free items he had collected at the weigh-in and adjoining expo. But Martens helped retrieve some of the free items, and several of them were fine after being cleaned.

The California native turned Alabama resident, who has a pair of victories on the Elite Series this year, was glad to see a happy ending.

A la Pedro Cerrano in the Major League films… “Hats for bats, keeps bats warm.” Or… maybe Bassfan is on to something with the keeping baits secret theory. For the latest in bass fishing news, follow Bassfan on Facebook: Bassfan Facebook
