Two Basildon Lower Academy students have been given the Jack Petchey Award for their outstanding contributions at school.

Liam Berry (below), in Year 9, and Year 7 student Alfie Tucker (above) were both chosen by their teachers to win the award that gives them £200 to spend on school equipment.

Liam won the award after he held a charity event for Miss Williams, a teacher at Basildon Academy, who was suffering from cancer.

20 people attended the event that Liam put on at the Tavern Hall Pub, and he managed to raise £280.

Liam said: “I wanted to help Miss Williams, as, when I was in Year 7, I used to run out of school a lot, and she used to calm me down, and helped me to change.”

Liam added that he was ‘pleased’ when he won the Jack Petchey award, and wants to spend the £200 on equipment for the lunchtime learning support groups.

Alfie won the Jack Petchey Award for the way he has so easily transitioned from primary to secondary school, and the way he’s made friends.

He said: “I try to make friends and if anyone needs help with anything, I’m always there to help.

“When I got told I’d won the award, I was in the middle of an English lesson. I was confused but really happy!”

Alfie has spoken to Mrs McCarthy about what he’s going to spend his award money on.

He said: “We thought of a little room in the school for fun equipment. A child from each class, each week, will be selected to go there, chill out and have fun. We were looking on the internet to find stuff, and we found Twister and a giant Connect-4!”
