Anything but the typical nondrafted free agent, Eddy Alvarez last played junior-college ball in 2011, concentrating his energies since then on qualifying for the Olympics as a speedskater. (The 24-year-old won a sliver medal at the most-recent winter games.) This detailed story from NBC’s Olympics coverage details Alvarez’s amateur baseball career and his rehab from injuries to both knees.
The third of three first-round selections by the Angels in 2010, center fielder Chevy Clarke showed modest speed and plate discipline in five seasons in the Los Angeles system, batting .219/.306/.337 with strikeouts 27 percent of the time. He hit .173 in 36 games at high Class A Inland Empire this year prior to his release, but maybe he can build momentum at a lower classification. This isn’t the first time the White Sox have signed an Angels prospect who flamed out. They previously signed lefthander Trevor Reckling in November 2012, following his release.

Triple-A Vegas righty Noah Syndergaard made only one start in between stints on the disabled list. He quickly recovered from a forearm strain, only to injure his non-throwing shoulder in a home-plate collision during the first inning his next time out.
Not many catchers during the past quarter-century have started their careers as slowly as Travis d’Arnaud, whom the Mets optioned to Triple-A last week. According to Baseball-Reference.com’s adjusted-OPS statistic, just five catchers since 1989 have registered a lower OPS+ than d’Arnaud (57) through their first two seasons (min. 250 plate appearances).

The Blue Jays released 2010 second-rounder Kellen Sweeney, the 22-year-old third baseman who is the younger brother of Cubs outfielder Ryan. Kellen never developed much feel to hit, batting .199/.304/.300 in nearly 1,000 career plate appearances and topping out at high Class A Dunedin this season.
