2014-04-08

Injuries to major league players have increased in volume each year since 2007, and the last three completed seasons have featured the most ever. Minor league players aren’t immune to the injury bug, either, particularly at the beginning of the season when organizations set their full-season rosters for Opening Day.

In this post, we collect all players who began the minor league season on the seven-day disabled list (as of April 3), with pull-outs for notable prospects. (For whatever reason, no Blue Jays or Rockies farmhands appear in this installment.) Rank in the 2014 Prospect Handbook appears in parentheses, while players who begin on the 60-day DL also have that noted.

Star-crossed 2009 first-rounder Slade Heathcott missed the last 40 games of 2013 with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, upon which he had surgery in the offseason and still is recovering. Pittsburgh Pirates

West Virginia (Lo A): RHP Jake Burnette, C Miguel Perez

Last weekend we learned that Jameson Taillon became the latest young pitcher to fall victim to Tommy John surgery.

In recent seasons, the Pirates have signed a number of recently-retired players as player/coaches for their minor league affiliates, and many of the players we see on the DL in this installment fit that description. According to the Pirates media guide, here are this year’s player/coach assignments: Rudy Pena (Triple-A Indianapolis), Miles Durham (Double-A Altoona), Greg Picart (high Class A Bradenton), Miguel Perez (low Class A West Virginia), Anthony Norman (short-season Jamestown) and both Jason Erickson and Austin McClune in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League.

Matt Ford, last active in the independent leagues in 2008, signed with the organization on Jan. 28, but it’s not immediately clear what his role will be.

Lake Elsinore (Hi A): RHP Roman Madrid, LHP Max Fried (3), LHP Matt LaChappa (60-day DL), OF Jeremy Baltz
Fort Wayne (Lo A): RHP Bryan Verbitsky, OF Brian Adams

Shut down with forearm soreness after long-tossing during spring training, 2012 first-rounder Max Fried could begin throwing again in April.

A left ankle sprain limited Alex Dickerson in spring training, but a closer look by doctors revealed a structural issue with his heel bone, so the Padres wasted no time in moving him to the 60-day DL while he assess his options.

San Francisco Giants

Major shoulder trouble sidetracked Danny Hultzen in 2013, and in October he had surgery that “cleaned up damage to the labrum, repaired a partial tear to the rotator cuff and also . . . repaired a torn anterior capsule.” Thus he will be out for the majority of 2014.

Tampa Bay Rays

Durham (AAA): SS Hak-Ju Lee (2), OF James Darnell, OF Jeremy Moore
Montgomery (AA): RHP Lenny Linsky, LHP Jacob Partridge, OF Ty Morrison
Charlotte (Hi A): RHP Albert Suarez
Bowling Green (Lo A): RHP Eduar Quinonez, RHP Jaime Schultz, LHP Brandon Henderson

Hak-Ju Lee (Photo by Carl Kline)

Hak-Ju Lee will miss the first weeks of the season as he recovers from a left calf strain, which is not directly related to the torn ligaments he suffered in his left knee a year ago.

Texas Rangers

Round Rock (AAA): RHP Ben Rowen (23), RHP Daniel Bard, RHP Miles Mikolas, RHP Nate Adcock, LHP Chad Bell, 3B Alex Buchholz
Frisco (AA): RHP Kevin Pucetas, RHP Nick McBride, RHP Randol Rojas, RHP Randy Henry, RHP Ryan Rodebaugh, RHP Zach Russell, C Zach Zaneski, OF Ryan Strausborger, OF Teodoro Martinez
