The bus carrying the Jackson State baseball team to a game against Savannah State in Georgia caught fire, but no one on the bus was injured, the school said.

The bus caught fire along Interstate 20/59 eastbound, according to reports, around 2 p.m. Eastern on Monday. Firefighters from Midfield and Bessemer, Ala., responded to the blaze.

The players and coaches returned to Jackson, Miss., on another bus, Jackson State spokeswoman Shelia Hardwell-Byrd said.

School president Carolyn W. Meyers greeted the players and coaches when they returned.

“We are relieved that everyone is safe. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers,” Meyers said in a statement. “The university will conduct its own exhaustive investigation into this unfortunate incident.”

Jackson State’s games against Norfolk State, scheduled for May 8-9, were cancelled, the school said.

The Tigers are 27-23 on the season and 9-15 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.

Jackson State officials said the team lost its luggage and equipment in the fire, but that Ole Miss and Mississippi State are helping replace some of it.
