Daily GK Updates – 5th and 6th July 2015

1. US wins Women’s FIFA World Cup for 3rd time

i. United States (US) won the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It is overall third world cup title of US. In the World Cup final match played at Vancouver, Canada US defeated Japan by 5-2 goals score.

ii. US captain and skipper Carli Lloyd scored three goals. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath scored one goal each.

iii. 1991 (61 years after the men’s first FIFA World Cup held in 1930). Played every 4 years amongst women’s national football teams of the member states of FIFA.

iv. After it establishment it was known as Women’s World Cup tournament. United States for 3 times (1991, 1999 and 2015), followed by Germany 2 times (2003, 2007).

2. FDI in manufacturing of tobacco products prohibited: RBI

i. Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prohibited the foreign direct investment (FDI) in manufacturing of tobacco products.

ii. In this regard, RBI has issued a notification which prohibits the manufacturing of tobacco products activities such as wholesale cash and carry, retail trading as they fall under the sectoral restrictions.

iii. This prohibition will be in case of manufacturing of cigars, cigarillos, cheroots and cigarettes of tobacco or of tobacco substitutes. Henceforth with this FDI restriction, other activities related to these products will be governed by the sectoral restrictions laid down in the FDI policy.

iv. It should be noted that the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP), under the aegis of Union Commerce Ministry has framed these guidelines on this sectoral restrictions.

3. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to Attend Inaugural Meet of BRICS Bank at Moscow

i. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is leaving for Russia on Monday evening to participate in the inaugural meeting of the BRICS-backed New Development Bank.

ii. During the four-day visit, he will also be participating at the functions on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit at Ufa which is being attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

iii. The minister, sources said, will attend the inaugural meeting of the Board of Governors of the New Development Bank at Moscow.

iv. The Summit of the key emerging economies in the world, will focus discussions on enhancing cooperation in economic area, including the possibility of trade in local currency.

4. Corporation Bank launched first MUDRA card under Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana

i. Corporation Bank launched country’s first MUDRA (Micro Units Development and Refinance Agency) card under the Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) in Mangalore, Karnataka.

ii. While Shishu scheme provides loan up 50000 rupees, an amount of up to 5 lakh rupees will be lent under the Kishore scheme. Under Tarun scheme loan up to 10 lakh rupees will be offered.

iii. The Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY) was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 8 April 2015 under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) to ensure credit facility to small entrepreneurs through Micro-Finance Institutions (MFIs).

iv. Corporation Bank is one of the oldest banks in India that was founded in 1906. At present, Sadhu Ram Bansal is the Chairman and Managing Director of the bank.

5. President Pranab Mukherjee Greets Malawi, Comoros on National Day

i. President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday greeted Malawi and Comoros ahead of their National Day on July 6

ii. In his message to the Malawi President Peter Mutharika, Mr Mukherjee said he was confident co-operation between “our two countries will continue to grow to the mutual benefit of our people.

iii. I look forward to Malawi’s active participation in the third India-Africa Forum Summit to be held in New Delhi in October. Malawi gained independence from Britain on July 6, 1964.

iv. In his message to Comoros President Ikililou Dhoinine, Mr Mukherjee said: I am confident that our relations will be further strengthened in the years to come to the mutual benefit of our peoples.”Comoros won independence from France in 1975.

6. Tata Teleservices appoints Anuraag Srivastava as CFO

i. Telecom service provider Tata Teleservices today announced the appointment of Anuraag Srivastava as its Chief Financial Officer with immediate effect.

ii. Prior to taking up the new role, Srivastava served Indus Towers as Senior Vice-President of Internal Audit and Assurance, a company statement said.

iii. He brings with him over 20 years of experience as a finance professional with leadership roles in finance and consumer goods and telecom businesses across multiple geographies, including India, the US and South Asia.

iv. Tata Teleservices offers telecom solutions under the Tata Docomo brand. It currently operates in 19 telecom circles across 4.50 lakh towns and villages, it said.

7. Microsoft to develop digital villages, cyber-security centre in Maharashtra

i. Software giant Microsoft has agreed to develop ‘digital villages’ and a ‘smart MIDC’ (industrial colony) in Maharashtra under state’s flagship ‘Make In Maharashtra’ initiative.

ii. It was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis after he met Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella during his visit to company’s office in Seattle, US. The location of the smart MIDC is yet to be decided.

iii. Microsoft will also set up cyber-security centre in Maharashtra’s IT hub Pune and also agreed to adopt a tribal village in Melghat district in order to provide ‘tertiary health services’.

iv. Both sides also discussed application of cloud services to MSMEs and technological solutions for implementing Right to Service Act.

8. Aadhar holders exempted from filing physical ITR-V

i. In a change that will impact millions of Indians, new tax forms released on Thursday have exempted taxpayers with Aadhaar cards from submitting their ITR-V by post after filing their returns online.

ii. This will make the online filing procedure truly paperless even for those who don’t have digital signatures.

iii. The income tax department intends to link the electronic verification code or EVC system-endorsed Aadhaar card to the ITR (income tax return) form submitted by a taxpayer and the authentication of the return will take place electronically.

9. President of Tunisia declared 30-day state of emergency

i. President of Tunisia Beji Caid Essebsi declared state of emergency in the country for 30 days.The decision was taken against the backdrop of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) gun attack on 26 June 2015 on Hotel Riu Imperial Marhaba on the Mediterranian coast and calls for more such attacks by the militant organisation during the holy month of Ramadan.

ii. In the attack, 38 foreign tourists were killed belonging to Britain, Germany, Belgium and France among others.A state of emergency temporarily gives the government more flexibility and the army and police more authority in dealing with suspected terror incidents.

iii. The Tunisian massacre (in Africa) is part of the trio of attacks executed by the ISIS across three continents that took place on the same day in France (Europe) and Kuwait (Asia).

iv. While an attack near a chemical plant at Leon in France decapitated one individual, blast near a Shiite-affiliated mosque in Kuwait killed 25 people.

10. Champagne vineyards of France granted with World Heritage status by UNESCO

i. The Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars of France were granted with the World Heritage Status by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

ii. The decision to grant the status was given during the 39th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Bonn, Germany. The Committee was chaired by Maria Bohmer, Minister of State at Germany’s Federal Foreign Office

iii. The Champagne World Heritage status covered the places where sparkling wine was developed using a second fermentation method in the bottle from the beginning of the 17th century until its early industrialisation in the 19th century.

11. 58 percent school kids in Maharashtra suffer from orthopaedic ailment due to heavy bags: Report

i. Maharashtra-government-appointed committee submitted its 12-page report to the Bombay High Court . The report says that over 58 percent of students below 10 years of age who carries heavy school bags are suffering from orthopaedic ailments in Maharashtra.

ii. The division bench of Justice VM Kanade and Justice Colabawala was informed that the report has been accepted by the Maharashtra Government.

iii. After perusing the report, the court observed that children will have to carry trolley bags soon as the backpacks they carry at present are not enough.

iv. The court asked government to inform that by when it is likely to implement the suggestions made by the committee in its report. The state government has been asked to file its reply by 23 July 2015.

12. Renowned US actress Diana Douglas passes away

i. Renowned US actress and model Diana Douglas passed away in Los Angeles due to cancer. She was 92.

ii. Diana Douglas was born as Diana Love Dill on 22 January, 1923 in Devonshire, Bermuda. Later she had immigrated to US. She had started her career as an actress in 1942 with Warner Bros Studios and had appeared in more than 50 films since then.

iii. She had modelled on the cover of Life Magazine in 1943. Some of her famous movies are The Indian Fighter; Planes, Trains and Automobiles; The Days of Our Lives.

iv. Her last appearance was Runs in the Family in 2003 and retired from acting in 2008. She had married famous US actor Kirk Douglas in 1943 and is mother of Oscar winning actor Michael Douglas and Joel Douglas.

13. Acclaimed Pakistani Urdu novelist Abdullah Hussain passes away

i. Acclaimed Pakistani Urdu novelist Abdullah Hussain passed away in Lahore due to blood cancer. He was 84.

ii. He had received worldwide fame after the publication of his masterpiece Urdu novel and greatest contemporary works of Urdu fiction Udas Naslain in 1964. UNESCO had published a translation of this novel called The Weary Generations.

iii. He was born as Mohammad Khan on August 14, 1931 in Gujrat district in Punjab Province of Pakistan. His other famous novels are Baagh, Nadaar Loag and short stories Nashaib and Faraib.

14. Lewis Hamilton wins 2015 Birtish Grand Prix of F1

i. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain secured the 2015 Formula 1 British Grand Prix title by winning the final race held at the Silverstone Circuit in Northamptonshire, England.

ii. While his team Nico Rosberg stood second, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was in the third position. Both the drivers belong to Germany.In the final race, Nico Hulkenberg (Germany) and Sergio Perez (Mexico) of Force India stood at seventh and ninth positions respectively.

iii. With this win, Hamilton became the second British driver since David Coulthard in 1999-2000 to post successive wins in the race.It was third British GP win for the reigning world champion and his fifth in the 2015 season having won the titles in Australia, China, Bahrain and Canada.

15. India retains South Asian Basketball Championship

i. Defending champions India have retained the South Asian Basketball Championship (SABA) title. It was the 4th edition of the Championships.

ii. In the final match of played at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru, Karnataka they defeated Sri Lanka by 93-44 score.

iii. With this win India qualified for the FIBA Asia Championship which will be hosted by China in September 2015. Results of SABA title 2015: India (gold), Sri Lanka (silver) and Nepal (bronze).

iv. It is basketball tournaments organized by the South Asia Basketball Association (SABA) in which national teams of 6 countries participate.
