I’m very excited about today’s post because I get to introduce you to a wonderful little company with a delicious product!
I first found out about Torie & Howard’s Organic Hard Candy through my April 2014 Bestowed Box. I am a huge fan of hard candy – Lifesavers were one of my favorite types of candy growing up – so I was really excited when I found out that a healthier alternative to my old standby exists!
Torie & Howard was founded by Howard Slatkin and Tori Burke; you may recognize Howard Slatkin’s name as he is the man behind Slatkin & Co,. the brand of incredible candles sold at Bath and Body Works. Torie & Howard were long term interior design business partners and experienced a shift in interests once they encountered certain health struggles and wished to find a remedy. Torie developed severe food allergies that drastically limited her food choices and Howard, after losing over a hundred pounds, nutrient density and food quality became of optimum importance. Their food company was born out of this and is based on using natural ingredients, wholesome ingredients. The “Torie and Howard promise” says it best:
We believe that food tastes better when it is made with organic, natural ingredients and responsible principles. We strive to create delicious, tasty treats that are made in a way that is as health-friendly, eco-friendly and socially conscious as possible. (Source).
The kind folks at Torie & Howard were super generous and sent me an assorted bag of their candies after I reached out to let them know how much I enjoyed them through Bestowed. The flavors really are so unique – the perfect amount of sweetness and tartness without being too much of either. Currently, they come in the following four flavors:
D’Anjou Pear & Cinnamon
Pomegranate & Nectarine
Blood Orange & Honey
Pink Grapefuit & Honey
They’re all good, but I think my favorite is the Pomegranate and Nectarine. It has just enough sweetness for the my taste! I would say the D’Anjou Pear is the sweetest one while the Blood Orange leans the most on the sour end. It’s very subtle, though – certainly not too extreme. I’m especially a fan of the ingredients:
Organic Sugar, Organic Rice Syrup, Non-GMO Citric Acid, Natural Flavors, Colored with: Red Cabbage, Purple Carrots, Organic Black Carrot, Organic Blackcurrant, Organic Apple, Annatto.
What’s even better, the candies are completely free of: artificial dyes, nuts, GMOs, corn syrup, gluten, wheat, casein, soy, and dairy. Gotta love that! It’s great to find a product that tastes good and is relatively guilt free as well (although, if you’re like me, you may find yourself eating way too many!)
