The Badminton World Federation (BWF) announced yesterday that former President(*) Sir Craig Reedie had been elected Vice-President of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee.
In its Thursday media release, the BWF said that Sir Craig, a member of the IOC Executive Board since October 2009, was knighted for the role he played in London’s bid for these Olympics and next month’s Paralympics, and called him the “driving force” in the efforts that resulted in badminton becoming a full Olympic medal sport in 1992.
“We at Badminton World Federation are particularly proud to witness the election of one of our own to this prestigious position within the Olympic movement. It is an honour of which he is indeed worthy,” the release quoted BWF President Dr Kang Young Joong as saying.
“We extend sincerest congratulations to Sir Craig and we are certain his vast reservoir of knowledge and experience will continue to stand him and the IOC in admirable stead.”

* Sir Craig Reedie’s tenure as president ended before the world body changed its name, and it was then known as the International Badminton Federation.
