The following morning, Marty was taken to the railroad tracks by Seamus and subsequently walked the fifteen plus miles back to Hill Valley. Upon arriving into town and walking past the railroad station, Marty curiously looked around while walking through town. Walking past various businesses, such as Honest Joe Statler and A. Jones Manure Hauling, Marty came to a halt and saw the Hill Valley Courthouse being built in the distance. He then looked at the Marshal's office, which had a sign posted at the door announcing that the Marshal was out of town in order to attend the hanging of Stinky Lomax at Haysville. At that moment, Marty noticed a horse-drawn carriage headed towards him and jumped out of the way. When the carriage had passed and the dust had cleared, Marty discovered, to his dismay, that he had inadvertently jumped onto a pile of horse droppings. Stepping off of the horse droppings, Marty noticed a nearby saloon and entered it.

Stepping off of the horse droppings, Marty noticed a nearby saloon and entered it.

Upon entering the saloon, Marty quickly drew the attention of three old-timers due to his outfit. After one of the old-timers, Levi, pointed him out, another one, Zeke, remarked that he did not know the circus was in town, while yet another, Jeb, stated that Marty had to have gotten his shirt off of a dead Chinee. Walking up to the bar, Marty was asked by the bartender, Chester, what he wanted to drink. Marty asked for ice water, much to the amusement of the old-timers and Chester, who remarked that, if Marty wanted water, he had to dunk his head in the horse trough outside. Chester stated that, in there, they poured whiskey and then served a small glass of whiskey to Marty.

However, at that moment, their conversation was interrupted by a man who had entered the saloon and started yelling at Marty, mistaking him for Seamus. When Marty turned to face him, the man realized his mistake. As the man, accompanied by his gang, walked up to the bar, he remarked that Marty resembled Seamus, especially with the hat, which he considered ugly, prompting Marty to take it off. The man asked Marty if he was related to Seamus, which he did not answer, and then asked him what his name was. After almost saying his real name, Marty stated that his name was "Clint Eastwood". However, the name provoked laughter and amusement from the man and his gang, with the man asking him what kind of stupid name that was. One of the members of the gang, Ceegar, remarked that Marty was the runt of the litter and another member, Stubble, approached Marty and made a remark about his teeth, stating that he had never seen teeth that straight that were not store-bought. The third member, Buck, made a remark about Marty's Nike shoes and asked what kind of skin they were made out of. This prompted Stubble to read the writing on the shoes and ask whether "Nee-kay" was supposed to be some sort of Indian writing.

When Chester tried to pour whiskey for the man and his gang, the man stopped him and stated that he was looking for the blacksmith and asked him whether he had seen him, to which Chester replied that he had not, referring to the man as "Mr. Tannen". Realizing who he was talking to, Marty identified the man as Mad Dog Tannen, causing everyone in the saloon to run off and hide. Enraged, Buford stated that he hated being called Mad Dog and that nobody was allowed to call him that. Grabbing his gun, Buford began to shoot at Marty's feet, demanding him to dance. After dodging several shots, Marty began to perform the moonwalk while humming to the tune of Billie Jean, much to the bewilderment of Buford and his gang, as well as everyone else at the saloon. Marty then jumped on a loose plank which rested underneath a spitoon, sending it through the air before landing on Buford and spilling its contents all over him. Further enraged, Buford attempted to shoot Marty, however, fortunately, Buford's gun was out of bullets. Stumbling backwards onto a chair, Marty was told by one of the old-timers that he better run. As Buford ordered his gang to get him, Marty climbed onto the bar counter, ran past them and then grabbed onto and swung on a chandelier, allowing him to run outside.

Marty, now using the name "Clint Eastwood", found Doc, but the time machine once again needed repairing after ripping a fuel line by getting caught in an Indian attack. When Doc started romancing Clara Clayton, Marty became weary of his friend's companion and tried distracting Doc from Clara so he could fix the time machine and they could go home. He often cleared his throat to break the silence when Doc and Clara were locking eyes.

Once again, he encountered a Tannen, this time it was Biff's great grandfather Buford 'Mad Dog' Tannen. Buford called Marty "yellow" and Marty ended up facing Buford in a duel. His great great grandfather Seamus alongside wife Maggie told Marty the story of his brother, also named Martin McFly, who was stabbed in Virginia City while trying to prove he was not a coward. Marty managed to overcome his complex and told Buford that he did not care what anyone thought about him. But Buford didn't give up easily without a fight. Holding Doc hostage, Marty was forced to use a Clint Eastwood trick from A Fistful of Dollars and defeated Buford in combat.
