After three seasons on Disney Channel, “Girl Meets World” is ending. The writers officially announced the news in a series of tweets Wednesday night, telling their fans, “We gave you our best.”
“Girl Meets World” was a spinoff of hit ’90s show “Boy Meets World” and starred original series favorites Ben Savage (Cory), Danielle Fishel (Topanga) and Rider Strong (Shawn). The cast also featured Rowan Blanchard (Riley), Sabrina Carpenter (Maya) and Peyton Meyer (Lucas). Guest appearances over the years have included fan favorites Danny McNulty (Harley), Lee Norris (Minkus) Will Friedle (Eric) and William Daniels (Mr. Feeny). “It is with incredible pride in our work and complete sadness that things end, that I report to this wonderful audience that our show is over,” the writers tweeted.

After the news was officially announced, the cast took to social media to share their feelings over the decision. Blanchard, who plays Cory and Topanga’s teen daughter in the series, wrote in an Instagram post, “Being on ‘Girl Meets World’ is the most significant event in my life thus far, it changed absolutely every aspect of it, and takes up most of the life I am able to remember. It is with this cast family I experienced mourning and heartbreak and overjoyment and long days that turned into long nights, each and every moment so painstakingly beautiful.”
Other actors in the series expressed similar sentiments, including Carpenter, who wrote about her life coming full circle and August Maturo, who played Riley’s younger brother Auggie in the series. His statement was released from his mother.

The last time I had in n out burger and didn't eat it, I had just been cast in a show called girl meets world! Tonight I sit here and I can't eat my in n out burger because life comes full circle. We speak in the language of love, heartbreak, friendship, family, sadness, and laughter. Wherever we are in the world, whatever we believe in, whoever we love, we all speak that language. We had the privilege of growing up in front of your eyes. The privilege of teaching the lessons we were learning ourselves and beyond that. To the family that was created on our set, between the cast and crew, thank you for giving us the ability to make mistakes and to grow. I felt so safe in that bay window. People thought it was weird that I was excited to go to work. People thought it was weird that we really did and still do love each other. That's a rare entity, we hold that tight. Thank you Disney for giving this show and these characters the chance to see the light of day. I know I feel very lucky to have given life to Maya hart. MJ- without you I wouldn't know most of what I do. I also probably would have never had 2 paint fights in my lifetime. We live in an intricate world. We can be adversaries whilst being allies. To everyone that watched our show and felt something, thank you. To everyone that grew up watching Boy Meets World and decided to give our story for a new generation a chance, thank you. Fans began to speculate that the end of the show was near when Strong appeared on a podcast saying, “We finished the third season of Girl Meets World. My brother and I were directing a lot of episodes and I acted in a couple. And the show ended.” He comments were made prior to any official word from Disney being released.
Disney Channel series have always had short shelf lives. In an interview with the LA Times, Disney Channel’s then president of entertainment said children’s programs quickly outgrow their target audience of children and teens. Therefore, ideas for the next great series are always being developed.
The last hope for fans of the series is that a streaming service, such as Netflix or Hulu, or another Disney-owned channel, like Freeform, picks it up. This strategy has been used for other shows, however, those shows were revived, not saved. Other classic shows that have been developed specifically for Netflix include “Fuller House” and “Gilmore Girls.” Fans are attempting to contact the team behind Netflix to see if they can save their beloved show.

“Girl Meets World” first premiered in 2014. The series finale, titled “Girl Meets Goodbye,” airs Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. on Disney Channel.
