The Association for Women in Sports Media is happy to announce its internship class of 2012. The six winners have each been placed in a paid internship and will also receive a scholarship from AWSM.
“We think we have assembled a tremendous group of interns this summer, each of whom should represent their schools and AWSM well in their internships,” said Lindsay Jones, AWSM’s scholarship/internship program coordinator.
AWSM is also pleased to announce new partnerships with The Washington Times and USA Swimming, each of whom will host an AWSM intern for the first time.
The winners are:
Kimie Bunyasaranand, Sports Illustrated
Mike Roberts Memorial Scholarship
Kimie Bunyasaranand graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania where she studied International Relations and Hispanic Studies. Currently, Bunyasaranand is working on her master’s degree at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism where she concentrates in Arts & Culture, with Sports as her beat.
She serves as the NBA editor and writes about the Atlanta Hawks for Aerys Sports, an online sports network, and also works at Rodale Inc. where she assists the editorial staff on international editions of Runner’s World and Women’s Health magazines.
Paige Curtis, USA Swimming
Katie Jackson Morrison Memorial Scholarship
Paige Curtis is a junior at the University of Virginia majoring in media studies. She has worked at the University’s athletics media relations office for three years, primarily covering basketball, track and field, cross country, softball, and football.
Curtis spent the past two summers traveling for the non-profit organization, Destination ImagiNation Inc., teaching children on Air Force bases about creative problem-solving skills and teamwork.
Ros Dumlao, Denver Post/Sports Journalism Institute
Betty Brennan Scholarship
Ros Dumlao graduated from the University of Illinois in December. While in college, she worked as a sports reporter at The Daily Illini as the beat writer for volleyball, track and field, cross country and tennis, and spent the summer of 2011 as an intern at Pioneer Press, a weekly newspaper in northwest suburban Chicago.
Since graduation, Dumlao has interned in the communications department of the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs.
Chelsea Janes, MLB.com
Jim Brennan Scholarship
Chelsea Janes will graduate from Yale in May with degrees in history and international studies. Janes said “Yale Athletics” might have well have been a third major because she covered nearly all of Yale’s 34 intercollegiate sports during her four years in New Haven.
She previously interned at USA Today.
Kelly Parsons, The Washington Times
Leah Siegel Scholarship
Kelly Parsons is a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is majoring in political science and journalism with a concentration in reporting. She has spent the last two and a half years on the sports desk at The Daily Tar Heel, where she now serves as the sports editor and beat reporter for UNC football, baseball and men’s basketball.
Parsons is from Winston-Salem, N.C. and has previously interned for The Clemmons Courier, WXII News Channel 12, ACC Sports Journal and the Durham Bulls.
Tori Petry, ESPN
Gene & Jackie Autry Scholarship
Tori Petry is a sophomore studying Telecommunication News in the College of Journalism and Communication at the University of Florida. Petry, from Ocala, Fla., won the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences High School Sports Package Award in 2008 and 2010 through her work with her high school station.
While in college, Petry has worked for ESPN Radio, WRUF Sportsradio 850, UF’s sports video website, GatorVision, as well as WUFT-TV and Florida Public Radio’s 89.1 WUFT-FM. She also completed a journalism study abroad program in Italy.
