THE HISTORY
Let me share the history of head coverings first. If you study Church History you will realize that Christian women continued to maintain the practice of “head covering” through the all centuries up to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. During the nineteenth century, many Christians in the United States and western Europe began arguing that long hair constituted the only covering women needed. Others said that women only needed to wear a covering when in church. The middle class and wealthy women switched from veils and caps to ornate bonnets they wore a covering at all. Bonnets became more a matter of fashion than of modesty or obedience to 1 Corinthians 11. Christian leaders believed the head covering called for in 1 Corinthians signified women’s modesty and submission, so they continued to wear whatever type of covering was in fashion at the time. Some women wore bonnets, shawls, or hats, as a part of modest attire or to designate the married from the unmarried. By the 1960s in the West, the biblical practice had become merely a tradition, so when hats fell out of syle, the practice was dropped in Christian churches too. However, weather for fashion or for scripture most women still covered up until the last 50 years or less. In fact in my own generation while I was not raised with covering your head as a scriptural based reason, many women today still wear hats and coverings of some type to Sunday services.

In the last several years I have saw a resurrection of the head covering movement. More and more who hadn’t before, or who had gotten away from it are beginning to start covering again, at least for Sunday services. How my mom looks in the above picture is how I remember her looking for many years in church. Both my Aunt and my mom loved to wear a hat to Sunday services! I love the look myself in case you missed my easter picture here it is:
THE JOURNEY
My journey with head covering I guess began as a child. My mom always would put headbands, hats, or bonnets on me. As I grew older I eventually went through a Tomboy stage where I did NOT like to wear a dress, let alone style my hair or wear anything on it. My mom insisted on my wearing a dress for church but because of a freak accident with scissors, my LONG LONG locks were….UMMMM snipped. So my hair for a good long time was so short that we just let it go.
As I entered into Jr high, I suddenly decided I wanted to be a lady again. So out came the headbands etc and they stuck. I still was never taught about head covering, really not even that my hair was a covering growing up. I just don’t remember it being touched on at all. I did have a huge interest in the Amish and their lifestyle and that is when I first read about why ladies wore an actual covering, every day. I thought it was interesting but never dove into it really.
I think part of my fascination with banded style hair accessories was because I really was born in the wrong decade. I love the 50′s style clothes and hair styles-especially the flip with a head band :).
After marrying my husband we moved to Ohio where we lived super close to two amish communities. In our church there, a Baptist church there were many ladies who covered. I was curious and that was when we first started looking at the scriptures. I ordered some coverings back then from Garlands of Grace. I fell in love with them! They looked wonderful and I will say that for whatever reason I felt more reverent in them. My husband really liked them too and asked me to wear them more. I did and didn’t and did and didn’t. This went on for some time. We eventually moved to TX and I ordered more coverings from Garlands of Grace and continued to cover a lot of the time. During one of my Bible studies there at PWOC the leader was talking about how she had struggled with submission and so she wore a covering for MANY years. I thought hmmm ok there has to be more to this.
My husband was in Iraq at the time so when he came in on leave we dove more into it. As time progressed I wore them more and more. It went from just Sunday service to a lot of the time. I loved how they felt, loved how they looked but really I loved how it seemed I was changing from the inside out, I know that is more from God but if the head covering helped at all, I am grateful.
I want to make some things known about head covering
I still do not cover everyday. There are days I simple place my hair in a pony tail or days I wear it down or another way but I do cover most of the time.
I believe that covering or not is a personal search and conviction. We must all search out the scripture on this, ask your husbands to guide you and what their preference is and most importantly pray and seek God’s word. We made our decision after much search and reference regarding 1 Corinthians 11
I do not believe that if you do not cover that you are sinning. I go back to my second point that this is a personal search with God. Headcovering or NOT has NOTHING to do with personal salvation.
I do not look down on or judge others who do not feel the same conviction that I do regarding this.
I also do not think there is a right or wrong covering. Some may wear a kapp, some a prayer veiling, some like I wear from Garlands of Grace, and I also sell Lilla Rose and wear that as well.

REVIEW TIME
I am sure from the above pictures that you can tell I LOVE Garlands of Grace. The main thing I love about them is their desire to serve the Lord. The company is ran by sisters, which I LOVE that too! I love supporting a family owned and operated business as well. Anyway, I follow their Facebook page and their love for the Lord is so strong, I just love it!
Another thing I love about Garlands of Grace is their customer service! I have never been disappointed with an order. They have always answered any questions that I have very promptly, they have shipped on time, and they go out of the way to ensure that your package arrives in excellent condition. Their packing details are so lovely! This time I had a stamp on the outside of my package, a business card with scripture-I LOVE that!!! The head covering was wrapped in tissue paper to protect it but it also looked elegant and it was tied with a lovely ribbon! When I we were speaking back and forth about this review Garlands of Grace asked me which head covering I wanted to review. I told them I didn’t care to surprise me. Well, when I opened it up and unwrapped it, it was like they knew me. Maybe they did after the many orders I have placed HAHA! They sent me the lovely Stretch Cecily in Rosebuds in Pink!!! I love pink and the pink and gray together is so beautiful for spring!!! I was so excited when my husband came home, I couldn’t wait to show him.
Wearing this head covering is so comfortable! One thing I love about Garlands of Grace coverings, all of them and not just the Cecily are they do not slip and you do not need clips to keep them in place. They are very flattering as well!
