Two ambitious ensembles present world premieres! Gene Coleman presents the New York premiere of “Spiral Network” and the world premiere of “Sendai Transmissions”, commissioned by Chamber Music America. New York’s Momenta quartet will perform string quartets composed by improvisational artists, including Yusef Lateef, Arthur Kampela, Gordon Beeferman, and a world premiere from Adam Rudolph.
Gene Coleman’s Ensemble N_JP is an ongoing cross-cultural project combining performers from Philadelphia and New York with members of the Tokyo experimental scene and traditional Japanese instrumentalists. With Yoko Reikano Kimura & Naoko Kikuchi (voice and koto), Naomi Sato & Ko Ishikawa (sho), Gene Coleman (bass clarinet), Nick Millevoi (electric guitar), Toshimaru Nakamura & Adam Vidiksis (electronics), Alex Waterman & Teddy Rankin-Parker (cello), and special guest Thomas Buckner (voice).
The Momenta Quartet’s mission is to bring the best of contemporary music to audiences in New York City and around the world, with Emilie-Anne Gendron & Adda Kridler (violin), Stephanie Griffin (viola), Michael Haas (cello).
This program features four new works by improvisers:

Artist Bios:
Gene Coleman is a composer and director. He is the recipient of the 2013 Berlin Prize in Music Composition and has created over fifty compositions for various instrumentation and media. Since 2001, his work has focused on global culture and music’s relationships with architecture, video, and dance. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with experimental filmmakers Stan Brakhage and Ernie Gehr, as well as musician Robert Snyder. He has been a composer-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome (Fall 2011); the Shofuso House in Philadelphia (2009); the Westwerk in Hamburg (2007); the Taipei Artists Village (2007); the Irtijal Festival in Beirut (2005); the Takefu Music Festival (2002); and in Tokyo, on a Japan–US Fellowship (2001). Many international organizations have commissioned and presented his music and film work, including: Konzerthaus Wien; the Japan Society; the Ernst von Siemens Foundation; Phace Contemporary Music; I-House Philadelphia; MoMA; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Maerzmusik Festival; and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago.
The Momenta Quartet’s vision of new music embraces composers from all cultures and from diverse musical backgrounds, including jazz and avant-garde improvisation. The quartet devotes the vast majority of its programming to living composers, many of whom are emerging or underrepresented in the New York new music scene. The ensemble gives multiple performances of their works on innovative concert programs that may include 20th/21st century masterworks and selected great music from the past. Praised by the New York Times for its “focused, fluid performance” and by Sequenza 21 for its “fire, fantasy and absolute musical commitment,” the Momenta Quartet has premiered over 50 works in the past eight years and has collaborated with over 80 living composers. Now in its ninth year in residence at Temple University, Momenta has also performed and lectured at Cornell, Columbia, Yeshiva and Hawaii Pacific Universities; Bryn Mawr, Swarthmore and Haverford Colleges; The Mannes School of Music and the Boston Conservatory; among others. The quartet has performed in England, Singapore and Indonesia and has received grants from the Koussevitzky Music Foundation, Meet the Composer, the Aaron Copland Fund, the Brooklyn Arts Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
