The desert is a place of raw extremes – the brightness of the sun on one hand, and the open silence on the other – but it also represents a place of solitude, untouched nature, and a time that both precedes and follows civilization. In September 2010, Hans Thomalla recorded sounds and images of the Mojave Desert and Death Valley, mining the desert locations sonically and visually to create a modular work based on those recordings: a 30-minute cycle of “songs” for large instrumental ensemble of 13 musicians, solo voice, and live electronics. Dal Niente presents this multimedia work alongside Karlheinz Stockahausen’s Kontakte, a work that broke down the barriers of spatialized sound and continues to be an influence on the cutting edge music of today. Kontakte surrounds the audience with transformations of myriad sonic categories, providing audiences new forms of contact with previously unknown sound spaces.

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007): Kontakte (1958-1960) for piano, percussion, and electronics

Hans Thomalla (b.1975): The Brightest Form of Absence (2011) for soprano, large ensemble, and live electronics, with video projections created by William Lamson

Goethe-Institut Chicago and Dal Niente present Johannes Kreidler

Claudia Cassidy Teather at the Chicago Cultural Center

78 E. Washington St.

Chicago, IL

FREE event

The music of Johannes Kreidler has stirred much debate and interest with its radical computer-assisted processes, electroacoustic elements, and provocative posture. In 2008 Kreidler received broad attention for an art performance action in which he delivered 70,200 forms by truck to the GEMA head office – the German performance rights authority – in order to officially register his recent 33-second electronic piece comprised of 70,200 samples. One year after Kreidler and Dal Niente won the Kranichstein Music Prizes for composition and interpretation, respectively, the Goethe-Institut Chicago brings Kreidler to Chicago for a presentation and examination of his challenging work. University of Chicago professor Seth Brodsky will moderate a discussion with Kreidler and Dal Niente will perform his work of “outsourced” chamber music (Fremdarbeit) alongside “Charts Music”, in which melodies are derived from data of the 2008 stock market crash.

Johannes Kreidler (b. 1980): Charts Music (2009), video piece

Proximity: Raphaël Cendo

Constellation

3111 N. Western Ave.

Chicago, IL

French composer Raphaël Cendo has emerged as a leading yet controversial composer of his generation in Europe. His style, dubbed as Saturation, deals with ideas of excess, acoustic and physical saturation, monstrosity, chaos, and mutilation. This music borders at times upon “noise” and pushes instruments and performers to new limits to uncover an extreme expressivity. While the aesthetic style of this music is unapologetic, the artistic movement inherently questions the nature of sound and perception. Cendo aurally explores the amount of sonic information he can give about any particular sound, and if giving too much information about a particular sound (“saturization” of sound) changes its perception. This extreme style of composition, which has already left a massive impact on the face of contemporary music world-wide, also calls into questions social issues regarding extreme behavior: the thresholds of pain, piercings, and scarrings. The composer attempts to connect these issues in a way that comments on modern thought and fringe behavior.
