The Smoky Hill Invitational boys swim meet was fast April 12, as the 22nd edition of the annual meet had six meet standards set in 12 events.

Half of those marks went to swimmers from host Smoky Hill, as senior Juhan Hong replaced former Heritage star Mark Dylla’s meet marks in the 200 and 500 freestyles and junior Alex Kohlman dispatched of a 13-year-old record in the 100 freestyle as the Buffaloes finished third behind winner Fossil Ridge and runner-up Discovery Canyon.

Smoky Hill’s other win came from the 200 freestyle team of Kohlman, senior Derek Liu, sophomore Ethan Evans — who posted a pair of top three finishes individually — and Hong, who swam the anchor leg and held off Fossil Ridge immediately after swimming the 500 freestyle final.

Cherokee Trail finished fourth for the second straight season, but finished just 28 points behind Smoky Hill with seniors Josh Bedford and TJ Konde leading the way.

Bedford won both of his individual events — the 200 individual medley and 100 breaststroke — while Konde claimed the 100 backstroke.

• Sophomore Sam Howshar scored with less than two minutes left in overtime to lift Smoky Hill to a 1-0 victory over Cherokee Trail in a Centennial League clash on April 15 at Legacy Stadium. The Buffaloes won their sixth straight game and kept a share of the league lead. In the first game of a doubleheader, Grandview’s Brooke Tasker and Eaglecrest’s Alexis Miller scored goals as the Wolves and Raptors played to a 1-1 stalemate after two overtimes.

• Sophomore Morgan Sahm shot a 3-over-par 75 to help Grandview finish third as a team in the Centennial League girls golf tournament held on April 15 at Aurora’s Saddle Rock G.C. Sahm finished third individually, five strokes behind two co-medalists from Arapahoe and Cherry Creek, and aided the Wolves to a second straight third-place team result. Sahm and fellow sophomore Emily Jung placed in the top five in the previous tournament on April 10 at Aurora Hills G.C. as Grandview also took third.

• The Smoky Hill baseball team scored three runs in the first inning against Ralston Valley in an afternoon matinee at Coors Field April 15, but managed just three baserunners in the subsequent six innings of an 8-3 defeat. Senior Devin Huschka drove in two runs with a single and senior Hank Hyde knocked in the other with a sacrifice fly for Smoky Hill, which saw the Mustangs score five times in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 deadlock.

• The Regis Jesuit boys won the title at the annual Rod Card/Regis Jesuit Invitational track meet on April 12, topping four city teams in the field. Senior John Schmidt won the 100 and 200 meter dashes, senior Jordan Hatfield cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to win the pole vault and senior A.J. Shaw topped the shot put for the Raiders. Gateway’s Devundrick Walker (1,600 meters) and Rangeview’s Ramadan Muhammad (800 meters) also took firsts among city athletes.

• The Grandview girls won the team title at the Pomona Invitational track meet at Jeffco Stadium April 11-12 and the Wolves finished second to Fountain-Fort Carson in the combined standings as well. Cherokee Trail’s Brandon Singleton won the boys 200 and 400 meter dashes, while Smoky Hill twins Brynell and Blake Yount each won the 800 meter runs among a slew of winners from Aurora.

• The Regis Jesuit boys swim team downed Cherry Creek 110.5-74.5 in a hotly-contest dual meet on APril 8 at Regis Jesuit. Senior Hennessey Stuart won twice individually to help spur the Raiders, who took firsts in seven events compared to five for the Bruins. Senior Chris Dawson and juniors Kyle Goodwin and Will Pieseski also won individually for Regis Jesuit, which captured two of the three relay events as well.
