AURORA | Cherokee Trail standout offensive lineman Ashton Torres is set to become a Montana Grizzly.
The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder — a three-star recruit for at least one publication — gave his verbal commitment to the Grizzlies on Wednesday.
Though he had interest from a variety of other Division I programs, the 2014 All-Centennial League first team selection chose Montana — a member of DI Football Championship Series (FCS) — for the feeling he found in Missoula, Montana, and his chance to contribute to a program with strong tradition.
“Overall Montana felt the most like home,” Torres told the Sentinel. “When I was up there, the coaches were all very nice to me and the football atmosphere is amazing.
“I also feel like I have the best chance of making an impact when I get there.”
Under coach Bob Stitt, Montana has won three of its last four games this season and currently sits at 4-3. The Grizzlies play in the Big Sky Conference.
Currently, Torres is one of the anchors on the offensive line for a Cherokee Trail football team that recently got back quarterback Conner Nantkes from injury and looks to make some noise in the upcoming Class 5A playoffs.
The Cougars sit at 4-4 going into their final game of the regular season, a 7 p.m. contest on Oct. 30 at Cherokee Trail.
“Right now we are focusing on beating Overland, but we are definitely ready to make a run,” Torres said.
