Over the past year Audio Animals have been recording a range of different cymbals. In total 100 different cymbals were recorded ranging from small 6 inch splashes to large 21 inch rides. The complete cymbals sample pack contain a huge 4800 cymbals hits and the hi-hats sample pack contains a huge 3200 hi-hat hits. Each cymbal from the cymbals sample pack was recorded was recorded with 4 different sticks. A wood stick, plastic stick, wooden mallet and nylon mallet. Per stick hit are 12 unique hits recorded at exactly the same points down the cymbal. Hit 1 is on the bell, hit 2 is as the bell meets the bow, hit 3 is on the upper part of the bow, hit 4 is recorded in the centre of the bow, hit 5 is the low bow, hit 6 is on the edge of the bow and hit 7 is an edge hit. Each stick is unique in it’s own certain way. The wooden stick achieves a solid cymbal hit which would be referred to as a normal cymbal hit you would hear from any drummer. The plastic stick hit has a similar sound but with a sharper dynamic hit. The wooden mallet achieves a more rounded yet sharper ting hit and the nylon mallet creates a beautiful gong type hit with much of the high end rolled off. In addition to each of these hits we also recorded them with a sizzle chain added. The sizzle chain adds a lovely jazzy short release sizzle to each cymbal hit.
When recording the hi-hat hits instead of just recording the 13 and 14 inch hi-hats we decided to record all 100 cymbals as hi-hats. Resulting in some very unique hi-hat hits. Splashes create a unique sharp quick hi-hat pattern, where as the larger crashes and rides create a more harder solid lazier sound which I have found is incredibly good for hip hop and slower genres. Each of the 100 cymbals have been recorded in 4 different foot pedal positions. Closed hi-hat hits are fully closed stamped down tight on the foot pedal, closed sizzle hits are hits with a very slight lift of the foot creating a slight sizzle on the hi-hat hit, half sizzle are hits where the foot pedal is lift half way and full sizzle are hits with the hi-hat cymbals just touching. In addition to the 4 hits open and closed hits have been recorded at 7 different timings ranging in speeds.
