The holidays can be a time of excess.

Excess eating, excess shopping, excess stress.

Stop me if any of this sounds familiar.

I bet you’ve thought to yourself at least once over the holidays:

“This is all a bit much”

or

“I didn’t really need to eat THAT much….”

I know the second part all too well. I often gorge myself on way too much food. I only get this stuff once a year so I gotta take advantage of it right?

Well, yes and no.

I would say the first plate is probably just as good if not better than the third serving.

After that first plate of food I’m just being kind of a glutton. Sure, it tastes amazing but my stomach won’t thank me.

It’s kind of like that with audio.

The 20th take of that guitar solo is probably not gonna make it any better. Either send the guitarist home to practice, or do a “Comfortably Numb” and comp those takes together for one great solo.

That fifth vocal mic in your mic locker might sound cool and all, but if you can’t get a good performance out of the other four, that fifth one won’t help you.

And once you’ve got a good rough mix going, spending a couple of hours tweaking and automating is a great idea to get it perfect, but like I’ve said before, there’s a point of diminishing marginal returns where you’re not really improving the mix. You’re just moving knobs.

Think about that next time you’re in the studio.

But there’s one gluttonous thing you can’t go wrong with.

Home Studio Corner’s 2 for 1 sale. Expanding your learning about audio is the exact opposite of what I’m talking about. You simply cannot go wrong with learning more about something you’re passionate about. And using Joe’s 2 for 1 sale you can actually take advantage of some pretty sweet deals when it comes to furthering your education in audio.

But you gotta hurry, this sale only lasts until the new year and you’re likely to forget about it over the weekend.

Go check it out and see if you can’t see something you can give yourself as a New Year’s Present .

Here’s the link again.
