The June Wildcard Chart belongs to Drax Project
Wellington newcomers Drax Project have shown a taste of what’s to come for the band, by winning ’s Wildcard Funding Chart for June 2014.
The Drax boys jumped out to an early lead on the chart with their freshly recorded song ‘Real’, and held it for almost the entire month. They did have to stave off challenges from Winston Anthony, Ghetto Sunrise, and a late push from Rob Vegas and Will Singe, but in the end, Drax Project had enough support behind them to stay on top right until the end.
theaudience.co.nz spoke to Drax Project after their win, and they had some kind words for everybody that’s backed them so far: “It feels amazing to get such support from people, for doing what we love to do. All those people you’ve met over the years that help you out when you need it. Couldn’t believe how much support we had from everyone. Obviously, we couldn’t have done it without them! Thank you to everybody that’s helped!”
For Drax Project, the win opens up a whole new world of opportunities to boost their burgeoning music career. “It’s opened our horizons up massively, but not just the opportunity to make a video and to fund some more recordings but also a lot of publicity. Hopefully we can do something really creative and original with the video to get our music even further. It’s pretty awesome to get some funding to put all the years of us jamming since we started playing our instruments and playing in bands into perspective. Now we have an opportunity to hopefully grow more as artists and present our art in a really polished way.”
As for the video that comes from the funding, Drax Project say they have been in discussions for a while about what they’ll make, but they promise it’ll be “Fresh, clean and… explosive?”
Huge congratulations to Drax Project for winning the June Wildcard Chart! Their undeniably catchy jam ‘Real’ is still available to check out on theaudience.co.nz here. Drax Project now join the likes of Lisa Crawley and Little Oceans as winners of the Wildcard Chart and recipients of $10,000 of Making Tracks funding from NZ On Air. Those two incidentally received some more Making Tracks funding this month through the regular funding round, along with other theaudience.co.nz artists Maya Payne, @peace, Weird Together and Midnight Gallery. Let’s hope this is just the beginning for Drax Project too!

Funding Decisions for June 2014
June was a cracker round. We are constantly surprised and impressed with the quality and diversity of the tracks we receive, and it makes for a tough decision time! This also marks our 30th round, and the end of the 3rd year of Making Tracks, so thank you to all of our panel members for lending their ears and expertise to this process.
We have been busy creating our Sound Advice video series. In an effort to give an insight into what goes into making these decisions and to communicate perspectives from industry personnel.
We have begun interviewing the Making Tracks panelists following our monthly meetings. The results are short videos sharing their perspectives on a wide range of topics corresponding to Making Tracks, and what they are looking for when choosing songs for funding.
The Sound Advice series will be available on our website, and will be released weekly on on YouTube, Facebook, Google +
The results of our competition in conjunction with Red Bull Sound Select are out: The winner, Mish Waugh, was very pleased with the awesome headphones and gear bag Red Bull provided as a prize.

July Funding Round
The July funding round closes 5pm on Tuesday 1st July. You can apply here. The July funding round brings a reduction in the time you have to use your grant. You will now have 2 months to execute your project ie return your contract and pay your deposit (was 6 months) and 6 months to complete your project (was 1 year).
Please apply for funding when you have the deposit and are ready to start your project.

On the live front
Brother Love’s Free Association are making a special voyage to Auckland this weekend for two shows, on Friday July 4 and Saturday July 5. They’ll make a raucous appearance at the Thirsty Dog on Saturday 5th with the truly mighty Seeds of Orbit, and acclaimed songwriter George Henderson and his New Existentialists; and if you’re a resident of the highly rocking West Auckland region, their show at UFO on Friday July 4th with the Neo-Kalashnikovs is but a stone’s throw away. The Saturday night also has special meaning for the bands, as it’s something of a tribute to their mutual friend Cameron Bain, who very recently passed away. Bain was a mainstay of the Auckland underground music scene until he moved to the UK; where he continued to make music. For his part, Marty Henderson has assembled an all-star line-up for his Free Association, including early membersPatrick ‘Duane Zarakov’ Faigan (Space Dust,Say Yes To Apes, The Axel Grinders, King Loser) and Ken E. Fly My Pretties stars announce Canterbury Winter Shows -
As famous for her hilarious on-stage banter as for her phenomenal voice, Anika Moa is to join forces with relentless indie touring artist Mel Parsons to perform 3 intimate shows in Canterbury this winter, for shows in Christchurch on July 23, Methven on July 25 and Springfield on July 26. Both artists starred in the Fly My Pretties 2013 Homeland Tour lineup; are currently working on new albums, and will be sharing songs new and old with fans. While Moa & Parsons are both currently Canterbury based, the relentless traveling nature of their jobs mean they relish the chance to perform in their home province. Recently visable on television tutoring inmates from Auckland Women’s Prison in Songs From the Inside, Moa is currently touring in the North Island with X-factor finalist Benny Tipene, and is looking forward to getting back to her Canterbury roots. Moa’s highly successful children’s album ‘Songs for Bubbas’ has just been announced as a finalist for APRA Childrens’ Song & Album of the Year Awards. The NZ Herald Time Out has confirmed that after seven years in Rotorua, Raggamuffin is moving to Auckland. That’s not the only change in store for the reggae festival’s eighth event, which will be held months earlier across two stages and on just one day: Saturday, December 13. It will be headlined by UB40 and Ice Cube, with Fiji, Etana, Gappy Ranks & P-Money, Katchafire, Aaradhna, Sammy Johnson, Brownhill, House of Shem, Chronixx and Tomorrow People all included on the bass-friendly bill. Zaine Griff ‘Immersed‘
Zaine Grif’s new album Immersed is a collection of songs recorded between 1976 and 1983. Upon finding them recently by chance on old reel-to-reels, Zaine was surprised as he had thought them lost. All of the songs have been restored and remastered by Steve McGough at Stebbing. The 12 tracks were recorded in several different studios with different producers and contributors including Warren Cann, Clive Edwards, Chris Slade, Manfred Mann’s Chris Thompson, Stevie Lange, Steve Bolton, Matt Irving, Andy Clark, Laurie Latham, members of the LPO, Reflex Band, Alan Coates, David Flett, Robert Norman, Adrian Shephard, David Wells, Simon Darlow and Hans Zimmer.
Ashei Release Debut Ep ‘Music Is Boring’ And Announce Tour
Music is boring. This is the somewhat controversial EP title from NZ rock outfit Ashei. After the success of the first single from the record, ‘Bright Eyes’, a catchy-as-hell, up-tempo and ballsy pop/rock track, the band are proud to be taking their new tunes on the road for a New Zealand and Australian tour. Finding time around their full-time day jobs, the committed 4-piece like to play as many shows as possible, landing support spots with national and international acts including The Ataris (US) and Scary Kids Scaring Kids (US), Midnight Youth (NZ) andVillainy (NZ). For Daimon Schwalger, aka The Nomad, 2013 was a year best forgotten. A series of unfortunate events led a move o Te Tai Poutini, the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand, to regroup and to record. There overlooking the ocean, the seventh Nomad album “7”was produced in just eight weeks in an outbreak of cathartic creativity…
proving when life gives you lemons, make beats. Featuring vocals from local reggae superstarIsrael Starr, London’s Lotek, Jamaica-directDexta Malawi, Caroline Agostini, Christina Roberts & His Majesty the King Kapisi, The Nomad’s arrangements span dub, trap, grime, and of course drum and bass. The album contains 14 diverse tracks, spanning most genres of the sub-bass spectrum. The result sounds fresh, though definitely constructed by somebody with over two decades of production experience, seven album releases, and hundreds of gigs to his name. For The Nomad, the wandering existence has been all about building strong connections with people and places. He shares the story of his journey through the creation and celebration of independent music.

Soundwave To Be A Two-Day Festival In 2015

Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah took to Twitter this week to reveal the plans for next year’s touring festival.
Maddah tweeted, via his infamousiamnotshouting account, that “SW15 will be held over 2 days in each city – Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney & Brisbane.”
A series of tweets then followed detailing how the re-jigged event will roll out around the country in 2015. The festival will be held across two weekends in February and March, each weekend taking place simultaneously in two cities, “So half the bands play day 1. The other half play day 2. They criss-cross Saturday/Sunday in each city.”
Maddah announced Adelaide and Melbourne as taking place first, on the weekend of February 21 and 22. Sydney and Brisbane will happen the following weekend, February 28 and March 1. He also tweeted some ticketing information: “The ticket price for the 2 days will be the same as last year. $185 + booking fees. These will be limited in number.
“There will also be a number of day tickets available at $120 + booking fees.”
Maddah then added, “I am hoping that offering day tickets will make festival experience available to those who may not be able to afford weekend tickets. “Putting the line-up across 2 days enables us to minimise clashes; give bands longer sets, better staging, production & infrastructure.” He hopes that the two-day experience “will give fans better value for money and a less stressful day.” And, maintained that part of the reason for the change was to satisfy the amount of acts wanting “to play after dark… This new set-up also gives us twice the dark!”
Maddah tweeted that the line-up would initially be announced as one bill with weekend ticket sales, “Later, we’ll split bands into each day & put day tix on sale.” He also acknowledged the success of Stereosonic’s two-day festival as influencing his decision to change, “[SFX Stereosonic] blazed the trail on this 2 day festival caper in Aus & provided advice & guidance.”
