Press Release – Logmate

Kiwi Technology Does Away with Log Books

New Zealand Mobile Application for Commercial Drivers

Auckland, 12 June 2014 – Logmate, an electronic drivers logbook system for commercial drivers launched today. Logmate is a smart and simple application for iPhone and Android that allows commercial drivers to do away with the more cumbersome paper log books.

In New Zealand leading industries overwhelmingly rely on the transportation of goods and products by road, the practice of paper log books to record activity and compliance is an unproductive use of time and a practice that has not caught up with technology. Greg McDowell, Logmate Founder and Managing Director, says it was this clear business need by New Zealand drivers that Logmate addresses.

“The application simplifies work time entries by saving driver details, leveraging smartphone GPS and date-time capabilities to enable driver to log a day’s activity at the press of a button. The baked in intelligence of the Land Transport Act 1998, means the app also reminds and informs drivers as obligations arise.”

“Nobody likes paperwork but for commercial and passenger endorsed drivers the need to comply with the law means they need to track their every movement, says McDowell. “Through the use of our proprietary integrated software, we can now do it for them. Enabling New Zealand drivers to focus on the important aspects of their job and know that their records are complete and accurate, encrypted and saved securely in the cloud.”

McDowell adds that Logmate is one of the first mobile applications approved by the New Zealand Transport Agency to replace paper log books. This process required the application to undergo a 6 week trial period in conjunction with the Transport Agency and the New Zealand Police’s Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit (CVIU).

“The Transport Agency is keen to support solutions that align with the Transport Agency’s objective of making it easier for our customers to do the right thing. Having electronic logbooks makes it easier for drivers and transport companies to comply with the work-time and logbook requirements” says Tony Marlow, Technical Support, New Zealand Transport Agency.

A point highlighted by Carl Hesseltine, a contracted driver, when he participated in the trial, was the simple and user-friendly design of Logmate.

“Paper log books are the worst part of a lot of commercial driver’s job, it is a time consuming process, having an application that is smart enough to do it for you is brilliant. Especially when you are stopped by enforcement officers, being able to instantly pass on all your activity makes the whole process so much easier and quicker”.

Through creating a transparent operating environment, Logmate also enables logistics companies to manage bookings and workloads more effectively by being able to view activity in a digestible format on demand.

Logmate application supports Androids and iOS with other platforms to be added at the transport industry’s request. It is suitable for any class 2, 3, 4 and 5 licence holders or those with passenger endorsements.
