This iconic song from ‘Pyasa” was posted in the blog way back in 2009. I just revisited the page. There is only one comment there, so I was in two minds whether to leave my take on this song there on the page or include them in this post . I choose the latter so here goes:
There is really nothing like the good old dose of Mohammed Rafi songs from 50’s to clear the head and get the system back to function. And especially this song from ‘Pyaasa’ is so charming that even the ‘head massage’ looks appealing. And the voice of Rafi Sb gets softer and softer with the progressing weird expressions on Johnny Walker’s face.

Notable thing is SD Burman’s obtrusiveness in composing this seriously funny song. He is so magnificently leaving the singer and lyricist in the limelight. That was the greatness of SDB, not really needing the centre stage.
I had seen the songs of ‘Chhoo Mantar’ when I sent the lyrics for posting and wondered how people recognized the songs as Johnny Walker songs while hearing on the radio. Because in ‘Chhoo Mantar’, Johnny Walker played the hero and sang romantic songs in Rafi Sb’s sweeter voice, perched on a branch of a tree, like ‘Shiekh Chilli’ – “Ghareeb Jaan Ke Hum Ko Na Tum Mitaa Dena“. I was familiar with the song from radio itself, but seeing Johnny Walker perform it on screen was an experience in itself.
(Note: In the age old children’s tale, Shiekh Chilli believes himself to be the smartest of all, while he sits on a tree branch and is cutting the same branch.)
There are 85 Johnny Walker songs posted as per this list. Out of this I am able to count 67 songs which are in the voice of Rafi Sb. In the Rafi excel sheet I have counted some 125 songs picturized on Johnny walker. So it is possible to have a century, even two, of ‘Johnny Walker” category songs as well as century of ‘Johnny Walker- Rafi’ songs. This is opening up another possibility of increasing my lyrics contribution tally. If one must go in for madness, there should be some method to it :) , Insha Allaah, God Almighty willing and captain and vice captain in the blog co-operating ;) .
Five songs of the film Amardeep(1958) are already posted , so this is the 6th song. Music is by C Ramchandra and lyrics are by Rajinder Krishna. So this is the funny ‘Johnny Walker’ from the film ‘Amardeep’. It is safe to say that Rafi sahab was “unrivalled” in this category of funny or seriously funny songs in general.
