Sandhya Mukherjee – a voice that is comparatively heard less frequently on the Hindi film screen, is a big name in the world of Bangla music and Bangla film music. In fact her association with Hemant Kumar as a duet singer, is almost as legendary as the on screen pair of Uttam Kumar and Suchitra Sen. Majority of the duets of these two actors in Bangla cinema, have been playback sung by these two singers.
Greetings to Sandhya ji on her 73rd birthday (4th october).
Born in 1931, Sandhya ji had the good opportunity and encouragement to follow her passion for music. She learnt her art at the feet of eminent teachers such as Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and then his son Munawwar Ali Khan, and also Jaimini Ganguly, Santosh Basu, Chinmaya Lahiri, and AT Kaanan. She gained early recognition when, just at the age of 16, in 1947 she was honored with the title of ‘Geet Shree’ at the Sangeet Parishad in Calcutta. And then in 1948, she was called by RC Boral to make her debut as a film playback singer in the film ‘Anjangarh’.
She continued to be associated with New Theatre films – ‘Jhoothi Kasmen’ (1948), ‘Sabyasachi’ (1948) and ‘Pehla Aadmi’ (1950). In 1950 she traveled to Bombay. Her first assignment was with music director SD Burman for the film ‘Sazaa’ (1951). Her duet with Hemant Da for this film – “Aa Gup Chup Gup Chup Pyaar Karen” is a song that continues to be a favorite of the listeners even today. A few more films followed, about nine of them till 1956. And then she returned to Calcutta. Her later songs in Hindi films are very few. One is for the film ‘Chimni Ka Dhuaan’, for which recordings were made in 1963, but the film got released almost a decade later. And then in 1966, she sang for the film ‘Mamta’ under the baton of Roshan. Expectedly so, as Suchitra Sen is the female lead artist in this film.
A voice that is close to Geeta Dutt, it has its own attraction. Her songs in Hindi films may be small in number, but they make a very memorable selection. When she recorded the charming “Maine Jo Li Angdaai Dheere Se Muskaai” for film ‘Jaagte Raho’ in 1956, under the music direction of Salil Da, one may not have been expecting that she this may be her last recording as a resident of Bombay. After ‘Jaagte Raho’, she returned to Calcutta. She has become an icon of the industry in Bengal, with a great popular appeal on both sides of the border, i.e. also in Bangladesh. She had been very active for supporting the cause of Bangladesh’s independence, and was the first Indian artist to hold a stage show in Dhaka, immediately after Bangladesh was liberated in 1971.
For today’s post, I present this delightful and fascinating non film song. Friends and readers would be very familiar with this number, from the radio listening days in the 1960s and 70s. The year of its recording is not known, but I have been able to track down the names of other artists associated with this song. The source is the online view of the music catalog of Delhi Public Library, from where I am able to get this info. The music is by Kanu Ghosh and the lyrics are penned by Prem Dhawan. The catalog gives detailed information about the song and the record on which published, except for the year of release. As I checked for online availability of this song, I find one upload on the YouTube that is unfortunately just a partial upload. So I have made a fresh upload of this song today.
