Divas of Hindi film music (20) :

——————————–

This is the last song in the series and I wanted a spectacular song to end the series. Luckily I had zoomed in to this song to feature as the last song of Asha Bhosle in the series, a month ago. For this is one song (among many for sure) I know a lot about and can write a detailed post.

The song is the climax song of the film “Yeh Vaada Raha” (1982). Lyricist is Gulshan Bawra and music is composed by R. D. Burman sung by Asha Bhosle with chorus. A stage song, where Tina Munim is singing and dancing, makes Rishi Kapoor too join in the dance near the end. Shammi Kapoor, Raakhi and Sarika are among the audience. Since I have seen this movie in theatre, so I can give brief story of the film from memory.

Rishi Kapoor goes to either Simla or Kashmir on business, where he meets Poonam Dhillion, a local and an orphan. They fall in love and decide to marry. Rishi Kapoor’s mother is Raakhi, who is class conscious and feels Poonam is not suitable to marry Rishi Kapoor status wise. She insults Poonam and refused to give them permission to marry.

Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillion have a car accident, while Rishi Kapoor is driving. Poonam Dhillion’s face is badly injured. Rishi Kapoor is seriously injured and is unconscious for many days. When he is conscious first thing he asks is to know how is Poonam, whose name is Sunita in the film. Raakhi tells him that Sunita had died in the accident. Raakhi also convinces Sunita to go away as with her beauty destroyed, Rishi Kapoor will only pity her. Sunita too doesn’t want Rishi Kapoor’s pity, is afraid of becoming a incumberance in his life, agrees to go away and never tell him that she is alive.

Enter Shammi Kapoor, who is a Doctor of repute. He tells Sunita, who has given up on life, that she can still regain her beauty. He arranges for Sunita to have a plastic surgery and gives her a new face and Sunita is know Tina Munim. Shammi Kapoor treats Sunita as his own daughter and brings her to Mumbai. Sunita’s face has changed but her voice is still the same.

Meanwhile, Rishi Kapoor thinking her dead is building a Anath Ashram in Sunita’s memory and collecting funds for the same. When he meets the new Sunita i.e Tina Munim at Shammi Kapoor’s house he is intrigued with her voice which is so similar to his Sunita’s. Sunita is bitter that Rishi Kapoor has forgotten her and failed to recognize her. Rishi Kapoor asks her to perform with him in the stage show, which he is holding to raise funds for the Ashram in the memory of his Sunita. Sunita refuses as she cant bear to be with Rishi Kapoor and not tell him that she is the same Sunita. She has promised Raakhi that she will never tell Rishi about the facts of that accident.

By this time, Raakhi has also convinced Rishi Kapoor to get engaged to Sarika. But he wont marry till he has completed the memorial project. Knowing all this and being warned by Raakhi to leave her son alone, Sunita comes and performs at the stage show. She tells the story in the song, which she cannot disclose in words to Rishi Kapoor. Finally he sees the glimpses of Poonam Dhillion, his Sunita in Tina Munim, and confronts his mother.

Knowing the truth, he goes to find his Sunita, who has gone back to that place where they met. Finally the lovers unite and there is happy ending.

There is the hit title song of the film which is :

Haan tu

tu hai wahi dil ne jise

apna kahaa

tu hai jahaan

main hoon wahaan

ab to yeh jeena

tere bin hai sazaa

o mil jaayen iss tarah

do lehren jis tarah

phir hon na judaa

haan yeh waada rahaa

This is the mukhda of the duet by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar, which Rishi Kapoor and Poonam Dhillion sing in the first half of the film.

In the song under discussion Sunita as Tina Munim is referring to these words in the mukhda of the earlier sung love song :

‘o mil jaayen iss tarah do lehren jis tarah’

differently phrased as
‘mil gayeen aaj do lehren kuchh iss tarah’

So there is connection between the two songs and the two faces of Sunita. Also the multiple clap dance step is meant to remind Rishi Kapoor of the old Sunita. Rishi Kapoor also is only as dumb as the script requires him and is quick enough to make the connection and calls out to Tina Munim as Sunita.

One actor playing two and even three different roles in a movie was a known thing in the 80’s but, two actresses playing one character in a film was a novelty. Now of course, the T. V. sitcoms have made ‘ a jaded affair ‘ out of plastic surgery.

Another trivia about this film is that Jaya Bachchan dubbed for both Poonam Dhillion and Tina Munim in the film. So half the acting done by these actor’s is Jaya Bachchan’s doing. Anyway, I consider both Poonam Dhillion and Tina Munim to be the true blue beauties of the 80’s movies, though they were contrasting, Poonam being more fulsome to Tina Munim’s classic features.

With this song, this series comes to an end. The fact remains that there are countless songs out there, many songs which I could have chosen for each and everyone of these Divas which featured in the the series.

I take leave of all the visitors and followers of the blog with a warm thank you, for reading and appreciating the posts and more especially songs. Believe it or not, there is lot of thought and care put in to select the song to include in the series. So much so that I am ready to go back to rather simpler free -lancing instead .
