The series has reached a stage where I have covered several old timers among female playback singers who left their marks in Hindi movie music. The last of those to feature here is Geeta Dutt. This is a duet with Rafi from the film ‘Superman’ (1960). Prem Dhawan is the lyricist and the music director is Sardar Malik. Only the audio link is available, but it is said to be picturized on Helen and Majnu.
I heard this song a few days ago for the first time. I was surprised to find this ‘yodeling’ by Rafi. I know that Kishore Kumar is famed for this facet of his singing. But I knew Rafi sahab had done yodeling in some songs, but this was a new example of a yodelling song from Rafi for me. When I searched the net about the history of Kishore Kumar yodelling, I found this Wiki page on yodeling which mentioned Kishore Kumar’s name and a Tamil comedian J P Chandrababu as having introduced yodeling in India. I found this page too. It is general perception that it was Kishore Kumar who started yodeling in playback singing with ‘Jhumroo’ (1961).
Now let us look at the Rafi Sahab’s history of yodeling. I found these songs which are already posted in the blog :
Unse rippi tippy ho gayi from ‘ Agra Road ‘ (1957), Hello sweety seventeen from ‘Dr Z ‘ (1959), Hello sweety seventeen from ‘ Dr. Z ‘ (1959), Gussa fuzool hai qubool from Reporter Raju (1962).
Still search led me to this song ek do teen chaar from ‘Muqaddar” (1950), where both Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle are yodeling. So this settles the matter, as this must be first instance of yodeling in hindi film songs.
Now let us come back to song under discussion. There are around around 130 duet songs by Rafi and Geeta Dutt.

Among the songs listed above there are mostly romantic/fun songs by O. P. Nayyar & S. D. Burman. Geeta Dutt sang some sad songs too which are all time classics for Roshan, S. D. Burman, etc. She formed the mainstay of O. P. Nayyar’s music for most of 50′s alongwith Shamshad Begum.
So here is the Rafi-Geeta teasing duet reminiscent of the 50′s decade. If I find Rafi Sahab’s yodeling better sounding than the others, than that cannot be helped.
