The Renault Clio is one of four Renaults eligible for the Continental Irish Car of the Year 2014

Some 51 new cars have been announced as early contenders for the prestigious Continental Irish Car of the Year 2014 award.

This is a significant increase in last year’s longlist, which consisted of just 36 cars.

A shortlist of vehicles, along with category finalists, will be announced ahead of next month’s awards ceremony.

The winners will be selected by the 28 voting members of the Irish Motoring Writers’ Association, with marking based on safety and innovation, build quality, space and comfort and value for money, as well as driving quality.

Its chairman, Gerry Murphy said that car makers are ‘certainly showing confidence in the wider European car market’.

Tom Dennigan of Continental Tyres Ireland, which sponsors the awards, said the IMWA jury ‘provides a great service for Irish motorists in helping them to make sense of the array of new cars that has been launched in Ireland this year’.

Last year’s overall award went to the BMW 3 Series. The 2014 winners will be announced on November 21.
