The Atlantic Cape Community College Board of Trustees approved the retirement of eight long-time employees and thanked them for their more than 250 cumulative years of service to the college. “There are some phenomenally talented people leaving this college. It’s not the years, but the tasks and the jobs that these people have done that will be most remembered,” said David Evans, board chair. The retirements that were approved include:
--JoAnne DeCicco Barbieri of Linwood, professor of business, effective June 30. She has been vital in the evolution of the Office Systems Technology program to produce high quality professionals over the last 40 years. She has been an active participant in professional organizations, including the New Jersey Business Education Association, which named her “Teacher of the Year” in 1999. She is described by supervisor Dr. Otto Hernandez, dean of career, technical and STEM education, as “an inspirational person and positive role model for both her students and colleagues.”
--Terry Sampson Budd of Seaville, dean of administration and business services, effective June 30, following 40 years of service to the college. She has filled several roles in the business services department and received numerous distinctions during her career, including the 2005 KPMG Distinguished Business Officer Award of the Eastern Association of College and University Business Officers and the 2012 New Jersey Council of County Colleges Spirit Award. She has overseen multimillion-dollar planning and construction projects across all three campuses and two counties, including the site development and construction of the Cape May County Campus, the Careme’s and M Building addition and the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math building.
--Carlo Canale of Vineland, senior technician for information technology services, effective June 30. He has served for more than 35 years as a media technician and received numerous accolades for his professionalism, kindness, outstanding service and hard work in providing video services and technical support. Former supervisor Nick Ganaway stated, “Carlo is the lead audio/video technician and is relentless in his efforts to perform at the highest level.”
--Linda McLeod of Atlantic City, assistant director of college recruitment, effective June 30. She has been the face of the institution for 28 years for many groups, including Jump Start, nontraditional students, adult populations and NJ STARS, with personal relationships with high school counselors and guidance officers in the college service area. Numerous supervisors have praised her work over the years, including Gina Skinner, former director of admissions, who said, “Linda brings her enthusiasm for Atlantic Cape and for education in general to every activity in which she participates and is an ideal representative for the institution.”
--Chef Educator Jeffrey Phillips of Mays Landing, effective March 1, following 27 years at the Academy of Culinary Arts, where he volunteered on the scholarship committee, the National Guard Pancake Breakfast, Culinary Student Association and the Junior Chefs of the Professional Chefs Association of South Jersey. Former supervisors Frank Verheul and Klaus Muller recognized Chef Phillips as a “master chef” and a professional with “sincerity of purpose.”
--Christopher “Kip” Rand of Hammonton, associate professor of social science, effective June 30. During more than 35 years at the college, he served as director of special services, representative for the continuing education and culinary programs and assistant director of finance and planning, before transferring to a faculty position in 1990. His commitment to the college was also evident in his tenure as head tennis coach, volunteer work at events like New Student Day, the Middle States self-study team, and serving as mentor to numerous adjuncts. Former Department Chair Lynn Lessie said, “Mr. Rand is a talented teacher who combines knowledge, skill and enthusiasm in the classroom and is an active, contributing member of the college faculty.”
--Catherine Skinner of Mays Landing, dean of finance, effective June 30, following 21 years of service in the finance department, where she was promoted from general ledger accounting manager, to controller, executive director and, finally, dean. She has received numerous perfect attendance awards, and her dedication is also evident through her commitment to college-wide committees, including Institutional Effectiveness, Enrollment Management Cross Functional Committee, Middle States Self-Study Steering Committee and others. Dr. Pete L. Mora, president, stated, “Ms. Skinner is held in high regard by members of the finance community external to the college including county officials and appointed officers from both Atlantic and Cape May Counties.”
--Grant Wilinski of Mays Landing, associate dean of academic student services, effective June 30. He has served for more than 25 years, first as librarian, and later as director of the area, which took oversight for the Learning Assistance Center and tutoring. He was commended by Dr. Art Wexler, vice president of academic affairs, who said, “In the course of the past few decades, the overall content and organization of academic libraries has undergone significant change. Mr. Wilinski has maintained an enthusiastic level of involvement in remaining current, and, importantly, passing this along to peers and subordinates.” He served in a leadership role on the college’s capital campaign committee.

He noted that net proceeds from the event will be donated to the Atlantic Cape Foundation to support residents of Atlantic City attending Atlantic Cape’s programs.
