While marijuana may not have the same risk of overdose as alcohol, it can still lead to addiction and a plethora of health concerns, says Chapters Capistrano.

There has been much debate over the legalization and safety of marijuana use through the years, and a recent study finds that marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol and tobacco, according to NBC News. However, that does not mean that it does not come with risks. Chapters Capistrano, an Orange County drug and alcohol rehab center, has released a statement to the press regarding these finds and the overall risk of addiction from substance misuse.

“Marijuana is still a controlled and highly addictive substance,” says Mike Shea, Chapters Capistrano founder. “That doesn’t change based on legalization. Alcohol is legal for those over age 21 but can be very dangerous if misused. It is important that people do not overlook the fact that marijuana, just like alcohol, can take a negative toll on the body and mind.”

The study also highlights the risks associated with chronic alcohol use. The article explains, “According to the CDC, one in 10 deaths among working-age adults can be attributed to excessive alcohol use and alcohol poisoning account for more than 2,000 American deaths every year. Meanwhile, most experts say there has never been a documented overdose death from marijuana use in someone without an underlying condition.”

Shea warns that while one may not be able to overdose on marijuana, there are still other risks involved and addiction can have damaging effects on the person’s health and life. NBC News notes that “lung problems, dependence, and early onset psychosis” are all potential effects of chronic use. “It is a mind-altering drug,” says Shea, “and you put yourself and others at risk. While under the influence, you may make poor choices that you otherwise might not have and these decisions can have a lasting impact. They can be damaging to your health, career, relationships, financial stability, and more.”

Marijuana, heroin, and LSD are all classified as Schedule I drugs according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. This means that they have the highest potential for abuse. Alcohol is not a controlled substance because it is legal. However, addiction to both alcohol and marijuana should be taken seriously as they can have life-long effects.

“Addiction is not something to take lightly,” explains Shea. “It changes the way you think, feel, act, and live. While the studies show that alcohol use can be more dangerous in terms of death from overdose, marijuana is still potentially harmful. Through drug and alcohol rehab, however, clients can focus on regaining control of their life and making the most of their future. They are able to improve their health, clear their mind, and set goals for the future without drugs or alcohol interfering.” Recovery is possible, adds Shea, regardless of your addiction, and a rehab facility like Chapters Capistrano can create a personalized plan to meet your needs and support your recovery.
