NBC News notes that “lung problems, dependence, and early onset psychosis” are all potential effects of chronic use. “It is a mind-altering drug,” says Shea, “and you put yourself and others at risk. While under the influence, you may make poor choices that you otherwise might not have and these decisions can have a lasting impact. Marijuana, heroin, and LSD are all classified as Schedule I drugs according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. This means that they have the highest potential for abuse. Alcohol is not a controlled substance because it is legal. However, addiction to both alcohol and marijuana should be taken seriously as they can have life-long effects.
“Addiction is not something to take lightly,” explains Shea. “It changes the way you think, feel, act, and live. While the studies show that alcohol use can be more dangerous in terms of death from overdose, marijuana is still potentially harmful.
