ST. LOUIS, MO (May 28, 2014) — To continue providing medical and legal education to health care providers, SL Chapman LLC disbursed $500,000 from the settlement in one of its class action lawsuits to The Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Law in August 2013.
On May 16, 2014, a portion of that money was used to support SIU’s 16th Annual Health Policy Institute in its continuing legal and medical education program, “From Critical Shortage to Critical Mass: Addressing the Lack of Donor Organs.”
Program attendees will earn five hours of continuing legal or medical education while learning about the current system of procuring and allocating patient organs, including important ongoing challenges to the system’s policies and procedures. “I benefited myself from the generosity of an organ donor in 2002 when I had a cornea transplant. This settlement offered a unique opportunity to benefit the Southern Illinois University School of Law and the great cause of organ donation,” said Brad Lakin, Founding Partner at SL Chapman, LLC.
There is a serious shortage of organ donors in the U.S., where the number of patients awaiting organ transplants could fill a professional football stadium more than twice. Both science and technology of human organ transplantation have significantly advanced to allow kidneys, lungs and hearts to be transplanted routinely and successfully.
Despite the progress, procuring and allocating organs to transplant patients is a significant ongoing challenge involving critical medical, legal and policy issues. For example, there is much greater demand for human organs than the number of organs available. In addition, under current transplant procedures, hearts, lungs and livers go to the youngest and healthiest patients while kidneys have always gone first to the sickest patients and those who have waited in line the longest.
SIU’s program will address the current transplant system and its challenges, while inviting attendees to explore alternative policies, including economic incentives and changes to organ allocation procedures. Attendees will focus on improving the health and extending the lives of thousands of patients awaiting organ transplants in the U.S.
