Birds of Chicago w/ Mitch Haney @ Smith’s Olde Bar

Birds of Chicago is a collective built around JT Nero ( of JT and The Clouds, Chicago, USA) and Allison Russell ( of Po’Girl, Montreal, Canada) — they are constant vagabonds touring almost 11 months last year in support of their debut, self-titled album. Their brand of rock and roll poetry can be a little hard to categorize, for people that insist on categorizing… their voices are undoubtedly the centerpiece, while the band pressure cooks country, soul, blues in a way that forces some people to reach for extra hyphens in their description… they used to use the phrase “rock n roll” to describe this American mash up — Birds of Chicago still do.

Ticket are $10 in advance, $12 on the day of the show. Doors open at 7pm. Online and phone sales close at 2pm.

Ces Cru w/ Info Gates and Kidd Swift @ The Drunken Unicorn

There were times when more hip-hop albums sounded like this, like Ces Cru’s Constant Energy Struggles, the Kansas City duo’s debut full-length album on Strange Records. There were times when albums were formulated around concepts big and small, dedicated to pushing envelopes, sharing pin-pointed messages and built around lyrical conceits that required intense listening, confident rhyme flows that created new patterns, music that thumped and bumped and pounded and grooved.

Young Widows w/ Helms Alee @ The EARL

Young Widows’ bruising 2006 debut, Settle Down City, introduced the Louisville, KY trio as an ugly force to be reckoned with. Two years later they dropped Old Wounds, their sophomore stomp that inspired at least a dozen imitators of varying degrees of success. From there the band traded some of their trademark fury for the bleak, widescreen atmospheres of In and Out of Youth and LIghtness. Now, three years later, Young Widows meld the strengths of their past and their tenacity for the future to forge an album perfectly befitting their merciless moniker.

Tickets are $10. Doors open at 9pm. Online and phone sales end at 6pm on the day of the show.

Harmonies. Soul-touching lyrics. Eye-catching stage presence. Underhill Rose has put its talents to work to become synonymous with beautiful music, charming personalities and, recently, increased momentum. With Eleanor playing her distinctive claw-hammer style on a Deering banjo along with harmonica, Molly Rose on guitar and Salley plucking the upright bass, the trio has carved out a place in the Americana scene with songs that run the gamut from heart wrenching to sassy and playful to thought-provoking.

Judith Owen w/ Lee Sklar @ Smith’s Olde Bar

That Judith Owen’s new album Ebb and Flow evokes the spirit of the halcyon days of the great 1970s troubadours is not accidental. In a set of potent songs about love and loss, pain and joy, dreams and despair, the Welsh singer-songwriter fearlessly explores the duality of the human condition – and to do justice to the songs she turned to the legendary musicians who created the seventies troubadour sound.

This show is free! Doors open at 6pm.

Fu Manchu w/ Electric Citizen @ The EARL

Mike Farris @ Eddie’s Attic

Anti-Nowhere League @ The Loft

The Anti Nowhere League set out on the road in 1980 to prove they could be the worst band on Gods earth loud, violent, obnoxious yobbos with one mission; to get banned from every TV show, radio station and newspapers as possible just for a laugh. They were hated by the general public as well as ‘real’ musicians who thought they were a disgrace to the music business(and of course the fact they were pulling more people in their live shows than they were). With numerous encounters with the authorities they have continued to play and release new material away from the public eye….In this day and age it does not seem quite as big a deal as it was back then when they stood alone now a few of the ‘real’ bands have taken up the ‘flag’ to be original with attitude. Long may independent bands continue keeping the music live and real. Long live the League!

Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of show. Doors open at 7:30pm. Online and phone sales close at 6pm day of show.

Surfer Blood w/ special guests @ The EARL

It is rare to come across an album as personal, dynamic, and intriguing as Pythons—but then again, rarely do bands these days have a story similar to the rise of Surfer Blood. Originally a dorm-room project, Surfer Blood quietly released their debut album “Astro Coast” in 2010 on indie label Kanine Records. It ended up garnering acclaim from nearly every vital music site and put them on the same stage as bands like the Pixies. Now, three years later, they’re ready to show how much they’ve grown, both as musicians and people, during their remarkably organic road to international acclaim.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $13 day of show. Doors open at 8:30pm. Online and phone sales close at 6pm day of show.
